Alfred Lazarus Fingleston , better known as Les Leston , (born December 16, 1920 in Nottingham , † May 13, 2012 ) was a British racing driver .

Career

Les Leston was one of the best racing drivers in the then still young British 500cc Formula 3 scene in the early 1950s . In 1952 he celebrated his first victory on the continent when he won the Grand Prix of Luxembourg . After finishing second in the championship in both 1952 and 1953, he secured the title of British Formula 3 champion in a works Cooper in 1954 .

In addition to a commitment to John Willment whose Cooper sports car he in the World Sportscar Championship drove debuted Leston the 1956 Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1 . On a works Connaught Type B it failed after a technical defect. With the same car, he finished third in the Richmond Trophy a few weeks later .

In 1957 he drove a Formula 2 - Cooper T43 in national races, a factory BRM P25 in the British Grand Prix at Aintree and was at the 1000 km race at the Nurburgring sixth on an Aston Martin .

After a serious accident in Caen in 1958, Leston concentrated more on building up his company that produced racing clothing. Until the early 1960s, however, he was a regular guest in British club races with his Lotus Elite .
