Le Mans 24 hour race in 1960
The 28th 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 28 s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , and 24 Heures du Mans Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , was held at from 25 to 26 June 1960 the Circuit des 24 Heures .
The race
The two US racing teams of Briggs Cunningham and Lloyd Casner came to Le Mans with their Chevrolet Corvettes for the 24-hour race in 1960 . With the Jaguar D-Type 2A, Cunningham also brought a predecessor of the Jaguar E-Type to the track, with which Dan Gurney achieved the fastest lap time in practice. The vehicle had a 3-liter aluminum engine and a 4-speed high-speed transmission. Hansgen and Gurney barely missed the 300 km / h barrier with their car at the end of the Hunaudières straight. The Corvettes had 4.6-liter engines with manifold injection .
Maserati made its Le Mans comeback with the Tipo 61 . After the factory teams from Jaguar and Aston Martin withdrew , the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa were the big favorites for overall victory in this race. Ferrari was also the declared favorite in the GT class with the 250 GT . Even the detail-improved Porsche RSK could not change that.
However, the race started with a disaster for Ferrari. The technicians of the works team had miscalculated when it came to fuel consumption, which meant that both Wolfgang von Trips' works Testa Rossa and Ludovico Scarfiotti's car were left without fuel after just 22 laps on the track. Ferrari had overlooked the fact that the new, steeper windshield caused more air resistance and thus led to higher fuel consumption.
At that time, Dan Gurney's Maserati Birdcage was still at the top, which was replaced by the Cunnigham Jaguar when it started to rain. After its failure, the way was clear for the third works Testa Rossa, which had just escaped the petrol drama. Olivier Gendebien celebrated his second overall victory and his compatriot Paul Frère his first and only victory on the Sarthe.
