John Eric George "Jack" Fairman (born March 15, 1913 in Smallfield, Surrey , † February 7, 2002 in Rugby , Warwickshire ) was a British racing driver.
Career
Fairman was a pilot who, in addition to racing, ran his own tool company and thus always had the reputation of an excellent amateur, although he was a versatile racing driver who competed in countless races for almost 20 years (1947 to 1963). You saw Fairman in sports car races (such as the 24-hour race at Le Mans ) as well as in Formula 2 and Formula 1 races. His career began in 1947 with a Bugatti he bought himself, and later he drove in Aston Martin , HWM , Connaught , BRM , Cooper and Porsche among others .
His best Formula 1 year was the 1956 season , in which he finished tenth in the World Championship with fourth and fifth places. His amateur status prevented him from being part of a top team, but he was in great demand as an occasional pilot and test driver. In 1963 he retired from active racing and concentrated on his business.
Fairman competed twelve times at Le Mans between 1949 and 1962. On his debut in 1949 , he and Eric Thompson drove an HRG 1500 Lightweight Le Mans to eighth place overall. This result also meant victory in the class for racing vehicles between 1101 and 1500 cm³.
His second best result in the endurance race on the Sarthe he achieved with another eighth place overall in 1953 , together with Tommy Wisdom on a works Bristol 450 Coupe .
In both 1955 and 1960 he achieved two further placements among the top ten teams in Le Mans with ninth place overall.
Fairman spent his twilight years in rugby town , where he died in 2002 at the age of 88.
