Sports car world championship 1954
The 1954 World Sports Car Championship was the second season of this championship. It began on January 24th and ended on November 23rd, 1954.
championship
As in the previous year, the 1954 world championship points were only awarded to the respective manufacturers of the racing vehicles and not to the racing teams that registered. The first six of the respective races got points according to the scheme 8-6-4-3-2-1, whereby only the best placed car of a manufacturer was counted for the world championship. In addition, only the best four of the six races were counted.
The championship started with the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires and ended at the Carrera Panamericana . This year's Tourist Trophy had a sport-historical feature. Similar to the Le Mans 24-hour race , the Tourist Trophy also had a handicap index rating. In this evaluation, the power and displacement of a vehicle were put in relation to its weight. This resulted in a handicap for large-displacement vehicles. This index rating was carried out parallel to the overall rating. In the Tourist Trophy, the points awarded at the World Sports Car Championship were not based on the overall ranking but on the index ranking. Thus the little DB HBR of Paul Armagnac and Gérard Laureau won there , who had only finished 21st in the overall standings. The Appreciation had Mike Hawthorn and Maurice Trintignant in work - Ferrari 750 Monza won.
Ferrari won the championship ahead of Lancia and Jaguar .
