The 1964 World Sports Car Championship , also the International Championship for GT Manufacturers and the Prototype Trophy , was the twelfth season of this championship. It began on February 16 and ended on October 11, 1964.

championship

The 1964 world championship was also a championship for GT vehicles . To the ratings of the various GT-divisions, a prototype Trophy was extended, which the 12-hour race at Sebring , the Targa Florio , the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring and the 24-hour race at Le Mans included . A total of 20 races were given the status of a world championship run, including the sports car races mentioned , four hill climbs and the Tour de France for automobiles .

The races of the Prototype Trophy were shaped by the expected duels between the racing cars of Ferrari and Porsche . The Sebring 12-hour race ended with the success of Mike Parkes and Umberto Maglioli in the factory - Ferrari 275P . Ferrari decided not to go to the factory at the Targa Florio , so Antonio Pucci and Colin Davis in the Porsche 904 GTS won . Scuderia Ferrari was victorious again at the Nürburgring and in Le Mans. Due to the absence of the Scuderia at the Targa Florio, Ferrari was disqualified at the end of the season and lost overall victory in the Prototype Trophy to Porsche.

The various GT final ratings were won by Porsche, Ferrari and Abarth .

Scoring

Already after the end of the two previous seasons, the division into divisions, which was unclear to outsiders, was criticized. In 1964, a coefficient was also introduced for the award of world championship points. For the first six of the respective classes, the points were awarded in the order 9-6-4-3-2-1. However, the races received coefficients from 2.0 (Le Mans) to 1.0 (e.g. hill climb). There were also 1.6 (e.g. Sebring and the Targa Florio) and 1.3 (e.g. the RAC Tourist Trophy ). While the winner of Le Mans got double the number of points, there were only normal points for success in hill climbs. In the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring, the winner received 14.4 points from the coefficient 1.6, etc.
