In addition to the brand world championship, a sports car championship was introduced again, this time for group 6 cars. A total of 14 races were announced, some of which took place on the same weekend. The season was dominated by German racing teams. German teams won 13 of the 14 races. The defining racing team of the season was Porsche . Works cars were used in both series, the Porsche 935 in the brand championship and the new Porsche 936 for Group 6. The most successful driver was Jochen Mass , who won eight world championship races.
Both championships ended with a clear overall victory for Porsche.
