Racing debut of the Alfa Romeo T33 / SC / 12

The 500 km race of Imola 1976 , also Trofeo Ignazio Giunti, Imola 500 Kilometres , took place on May 23 at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari and was the sixth round of the sports car world championship of that year. The race was named after the Italian Ferrari works driver Ignazio Giunti , who had a fatal accident at the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires in 1971 .

The race

With the Alfa Romeo T33 / SC / 12 , Alfa Romeo returned to the sports car world championship in 1976 . Thus, the received Porsche - works team another opponent. The fastest in qualifying was neither a Porsche nor an Alfa Romeo driver, but Jean-Pierre Jarier in the Alpine-Renault A442 in front of teammate Jody Scheckter . In the race, both Alpines retired after engine damage, so that victory went to Porsche again. Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx won in the Porsche 936 after three hours driving time ahead of the Alfa Romeo of Vittorio Brambilla and Arturo Merzario .
