Jürgen Barth (racing driver)
Jürgen Barth (born December 10, 1947 in Thum ) is a former German automobile racing driver .
Career
Jürgen Barth is the son of the German racing driver Edgar Barth . He lived with his parents in the GDR for the first few years until his father's license was revoked by the General German Motorsport Association (ADMV) in East Berlin after winning a Porsche 550 in the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1957 . Edgar Barth then stayed in West Germany, and his wife Gerda fled with their son from East to West Berlin on November 30, 1957. Jürgen Barth came to Porsche at an early age through his father and completed an apprenticeship as a vehicle mechanic and industrial clerk in the company.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Jürgen Barth was one of the world's best sports car drivers. During this time he also drove numerous rallies together with the Porsche development and racing engineer Roland Kussmaul . He was closely associated with the Porsche brand throughout his career. In his races he almost exclusively drove vehicles from Porsche, was also available to the company as a test driver for road vehicles and later as a race director for its automobile racing works. He celebrated his greatest successes in long-distance races, among others. a. In 1977 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans (together with Jacky Ickx and Hurley Haywood in the works Porsche 936/77 ) and in 1980 together with Rolf Stommelen the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring . The two Germans drove a Porsche 908/3 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring .
Barth drove his first race in 1969 at the Hockenheimring , where he competed in a national GT race and finished sixth. He celebrated his first victory in Diepholz in 1972 .
Together with the two Frenchmen Stéphane Ratel and Patrick Peter, Barth founded the BPR racing series (BPR for Barth, Peter, Ratel) for GT and Grand Tourismo racing cars in 1994 , from which the 1997 FIA GT championship emerged . Since 2007, Barth has been organizing the ADAC GT Masters , a racing series for sports cars based on the FIA GT3 regulations, together with the ADAC .
Jürgen Barth, together with co-author Gustav Büsing, wrote the three-volume reference work “The new big book of Porsche types” (2005, ISBN 3613024381 ; the first edition by Lothar Boschen and Jürgen Barth was published in 1977) and together with Patrick Albinet and Bernhard Weigel the book “ Porsche 904 "( ISBN 3898801152 ).
