1981 Riverside 6 Hours
The 1981 Riverside 6-Hour Race , also known as the Los Angeles Times / Toyota Grand Prix of Endurance, Riverside International Raceway , took place on April 24th at the Riverside International Raceway and was the fifth round of this year 's World Sports Car Championship . At the same time, the race was the fifth round of the IMSA GTO and GTU championship in 1981.
The race
By combining the 1981 Sports Car World Championship with the US IMSA GTP series at some racing events, the fourth - the Monza 1000 km race - and the fifth world championship round - the Riverside race - were on the same day carried out. Due to the time difference between Europe and North America, Riverside started later. The race was important for BMW because their first IMSA prototype , the BMW M-1 / C , made its racing debut. David Hobbs and Marc Surer finished the race in sixth place overall. The race was won by John Fitzpatrick and Jim Busby , with a narrow 34-second lead over John Paul and his son John Paul junior after six hours of racing . The two winning teams and those placed up to fifth overall all drove a Porsche 935 .
