Monza 1000 km race in 1981
The 22nd 1000 km race of Monza , also 1000 km di Monza, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 26, 1981 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the fourth round of the World Sports Car Championship and the fourth race of the Italian group -6 championship this year.
The race
In contrast to the world championship run in Mugello , which had been held two weeks earlier , the race in Monza again had an acceptable field. 46 vehicles were registered, 32 of which started the race. The Italians Carlo Facetti and Martino Finotto had bad luck . Facetti had achieved the fastest lap time in qualifying with the Ferrari 308GTB of the Jolly Club team; However, the two drivers were unable to take part in the race on Sunday because the Ferrari could not be started. A defective ignition distributor was subsequently identified as the cause. On the best grid position therefore stood plant - Lancia Beta Monte Carlo by Piercarlo Ghinzani and Andrea de Cesaris . The Italian Giuseppe Piazzi contested the race with a rarely used racing car; a group 5 - Fiat X1 / 9 , which was built at Dallara . However, the car retired after four laps.
The weather conditions were bad on race day; it rained almost the entire race time. After the two long-leading works Lancia did not finish, the trio Edgar Dören , Jürgen Lässig and Gerhard Holup won by one lap over two Osella PA9s .
