Dieter Schornstein (born June 28, 1940 in Aachen ; † December 19, 2014 ) was a German racing car driver , team owner and entrepreneur.

Career

Schornstein started his racing career late at the age of 35. First he drove a private Porsche 911 Carrera RS in 1975 and 1976 in the German Automobile Circuit Cup (DARM) and other touring car races , in which he achieved several class wins in Group 3.

He achieved his first overall victory in 1976 for the Porsche Kremer team in a Porsche 934 at the Nürburgring Neuss race. A year later he regularly drove a 934 and later a 934/5 in the German Automobile Circuit Cup and in the 1st division of the German Racing Championship (DRM). In the DARM he was able to achieve four more overall victories.

He also drove his first long-distance races at the Nürburgring , Brands Hatch and Hockenheim in the sports car world championship . From 1978 to 1980 Schornstein started the DRM and sports car world championship season with a Porsche 935 / 77A - from 1979 with his own racing team. At the 6-hour races in Dijon and Silverstone, he and Edgar Dören both finished in third place in 1978. At the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1979 , he finished 7th overall with Edgar Dören and Götz von Tschirnhaus .

In 1980 Schornstein drove to 8th place with Harald Grohs and Götz von Tschirnhaus in Le Mans and achieved class victory in Group 5 . A year later he competed in a Porsche 935 J set up by Joest in the DRM and in the sports car world championship. One of his greatest successes was winning the 6-hour race at Silverstone , which he celebrated together with Walter Röhrl and Harald Grohs. In 1982 he achieved his best overall placement in this racing series with 7th place in the DRM.

In the last two years of his racing career he drove a Porsche 956 in Group C of the World Sports Car Championship and regularly achieved top ten placements with team drivers such as Volkert Merl , “John Winter” and Hans Heyer .

In 1984 Schornstein withdrew from racing. From 1978 to 1984 he competed at Le Mans a total of five times.

His metal construction business has been continued since 2001 by his son, who has also been regularly driving a Porsche 911 GT3 at the Nürburgring in the 24-hour race since 2005.

Dieter Schornstein died on December 19, 2014 at the age of 74.
