Brands Hatch or Brands Hatch Circuit is a motorsport racetrack in England . It is located in the community of Fawkham (near Dartford ) in the county of Kent, south-east of London , and is located directly between the A20 motorway and the M20 motorway . The first races took place in Brands Hatch as early as 1926 , but at that time it was still on a grass track.
history
In 1950 the slightly lengthened course was given an asphalt surface and Formula 3 races took place. From 1956 there were also Formula 2 races here . Since the renovation in 1959, there have been two route variants; the short version with a length of 1.93 kilometers is known as the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit . The first Formula 1 GP on the long variant took place in July 1964, and from then on the Great Britain Grand Prix was held here in alternation with Silverstone . In addition to the twelve so-called races, the European Grand Prix, which was also part of the Formula 1 World Championship, took place here in 1983 and 1985 . In addition, Brands Hatch was also known for numerous Formula 1 races without world championship status. In particular, the Race of Champions , which was held a total of 14 times up to 1983 , was able to establish itself here. In the course of time, however, the racing course no longer met the ever-increasing safety requirements of Formula 1 and at some point both the paddock and the pit area were also classified as completely inadequate. The last Formula 1 GP was held at Brands Hatch in 1986.
The 3.908-kilometer Brands Hatch Race Circuit is a mountain and valley railway across a forest landscape and is considered to be very demanding from a driving point of view. The earlier Dingle Dell chicane was removed in 2003 and replaced by the Sheene’s curve. In addition to the pure asphalt track, there are also gravel passages in the front part of the facility, because rallycross races were also held here. The annual British Rallycross Grand Prix was extremely popular with drivers and spectators . From 1982 to 1994 it was driven out a total of 13 times at the beginning of December and, despite the mostly icy cold, often attracted around 25,000 spectators from Germany and abroad to Fawkham.
In Brands Hatch , although no Formula 1 races are longer take, but there are still a number of other important motor sports events such as Superbike, Touring Car - Champ Car 3 race Formula discharged and there -.
During the 2012 Summer Paralympics , the cycling races were held on part of the route.
Deadly accidents
There were also some fatal accidents here, in which the Formula 1 racing drivers Shane Summers and Joseph “Jo” Siffert lost their lives. On August 3, 2008, Brit Craig Jones fell and was hit in the head by Andrew Pitt driving behind him . Jones succumbed to serious injuries a day later. On July 19, 2009, Formula 2 driver Henry Surtees was killed here. He was hit by a tire flying through the air in the fast Westfield section, passed out and hit the curb at Sheene's corner. He later died in a hospital in London.
On August 17, 2013, the former head of BMW Motorsport Karl-Heinz Kalbfell died in a motorcycle race at Brands Hatch. During training for a run of the English championship for historic motorcycles (WRR Lansdowne Cup Championship 500 cm³) Kalbfell fell on the exit of the Druids curve and was hit by a subsequent pilot.
