Reports
background
The largest field of participants of the season with 34 vehicles traveled to the British Grand Prix, although only 25 vehicles were to be allowed for the race.
Rikky von Opel had voluntarily ended his Grand Prix career due to continued unsuccessfulness. This gave the Brabham factory team a free cockpit, which was then taken over for the rest of the season by Carlos Pace , who was looking for a new contract after his resignation from Surtees and an interim solution in the private team John Goldie Racing. The second customer Brabham of the Goldie team was then given under a modified team name and with the unusual start number 208 to the Italian Lella Lombardi , the second woman after Maria Teresa de Filippis in the 1958 season , who was registered for a Grand Prix.
John Surtees occupied the second car of his team alongside regular driver Jochen Mass with Derek Bell instead of José Dolhem . The pay driver Tom Belsø got another chance in the second car of Frank Williams alongside regular driver ARTURO MERZARIO .
Howden Ganley returned to Formula 1 as the driver of the new Japanese Maki team. Peter Gethin also had a comeback , who was provided by Graham Hill as a possible replacement driver for the injured regular driver Guy Edwards . When Edwards realized during practice that his injury was preventing him from driving too much, Gethin was eventually deployed. With David Purley at the wheel of the token , there was even a third returnees this weekend.
A Lyncar 006 vehicle , which was driven by John Nicholson , a Formula 1 rookie , was at the start for the first time. Another debut competitor was Mike Wilds , who competed in the private March , which had been driven by James Hunt the previous year as a customer vehicle for the Hesketh team .
training
Niki Lauda achieved his third pole position in a row in training, as he did at the French Grand Prix two weeks earlier alongside Ronnie Peterson , who this time set the fastest time for the Austrian. The second row consisted of the Tyrrell by Jody Scheckter and Carlos Reutemanns Brabham. The third row was shared by Tom Pryce and James Hunt, who had collided with each other shortly after the start of the two previous GPs. World Championship contenders Emerson Fittipaldi and Clay Regazzoni followed in row four . So there were six different vehicles on the first six starting positions.
run
While Lauda took the lead from pole position, Scheckter and Regazzoni found their way past Peterson. Reutemann, Fittipaldi, Pryce and Stuck followed . Hunt retired after a bad start on the third lap due to suspension damage and a resulting spin.
Until about halfway through the race the order at the front remained constant. Then Reutemann turned. A short time later, Peterson and Regazzoni had to go to the pits due to tire damage they had suffered when they ran over debris after an accident from Stuck. As a result, Lauda and Scheckter were clearly in the lead, while Fittipaldi was already considerably behind in third place.
Nothing changed until Lauda slowed down shortly before the end of the race due to a puncture. He headed for the pits and was overtaken by Scheckter. After his tire change, the officials prevented Lauda from being allowed to go out onto the track again, as they already considered the race to be over. In fact, however, the last lap of the race was still in progress. He was then rated ninth. Due to a protest by Scuderia Ferrari , he was subsequently awarded fifth place.
With Fittipaldi's second place, McLaren took the lead again in the Constructors' World Championship.
Registration list
1 Peter Gethin took over the number 27 Lola from Guy Edwards during practice.
