John Barry Nicholson (born October 6, 1941 in Auckland , New Zealand , † September 18, 2017 in England ) was a New Zealand automobile racing driver .

Career

John Nicholson had some success on a Brabham BT18 in his native New Zealand when he came to Europe in 1971. However, Nicholson did not drive at the beginning, but worked as an engine technician at McLaren .

When he raced again, he secured the championship title in Formula Atlantic in 1973 and 1974 on an in-house design, the Lyncar . However, after founding an engine tuning company in 1973, he was no longer able to manage a large racing program. Nicholson's company took over the service of the Cosworth engines that McLaren used in Formula 1 . He once made it into Formula 1 as a driver. At the 1975 British Grand Prix , he was at the start with his Lyncar 006 and had an accident in the rain, but was classified in 17th place.

After less successful years in Formula 2 and Formula 5000 , Nicholson returned to New Zealand in 1978 to pursue his business.
