Brabham BT18
The Brabham BT18 was a formula racing car that Brabham built in the mid-1960s. The designation BT stood for the surnames of Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac , the two designers.
Development history
The forerunner Brabham BT16 from 1965 initially had a Cosworth SCA, BRM or Holbay MAE engine. On March 20, 1965 at the F2 GP of Silverstone, England, it was equipped with the Honda RA300E (F2) engine. 996.7 cm³ with the engine produced 135 horsepower at 10,000 min -1 .
The BT18 was designed as a Formula 2 and Formula 3 racing car and most vehicles of this type were also used in these racing series. 2 vehicles, F2-18-66 and F2-19-66, were used by the Brabham factory team with Honda engines. 32 were Formula 2 racing cars and designated as BT18A. 6 copies were equipped with a Cosworth SCA engine for private teams. A special version BT18B of 8 copies was equipped with Kent engines from Ford for the Honda Racing School for the Formula Ford coming in 1966. A total of 46 copies of the BT18 (+ A + B) were produced.
The car had a tubular space frame, which was reinforced by supporting sheet metal. The regulations stipulated a displacement limit of 1000 cm³ and a minimum weight of 420 kg. As an engine supplier, Honda only equipped the Brabham racing team with a 1000 cc engine in 1965 and 1966 . 1966 drove the racing drivers Jack Brabham and Denis Hulme with the Brabham-Honda BT18 a total of 11 victories in 12 races. Jack Brabham won the Formula 2 championship and Denis Hulme the Formula 2 runner-up in the same year. With 994 cc of the RA302E (F2) engine produced 150 horsepower at 11,000 min -1 .
