Christopher "Chris" Irwin (born June 27, 1942 in London ) is a former British Formula 1 driver.
Career
When he was first used on July 16, 1966 in Formula 1, he only just missed the first championship points at the Grand Prix of Great Britain in a Brabham BT11 - Repco with seventh place. On September 25 of the same year, Irwin came as a substitute driver for Denis Hulme in the Formula 2 Brabham-Honda BT18 , for the first time in Albi , France , where he drove to third place. In 1967 the British private team Reg Parnell Racing signed him to the Dutch Grand Prix , where he replaced Piers Courage . However, in the unreliable BRM chassis, he only finished four out of nine races. His best and at the same time only final result in the points was fifth place at the French Grand Prix in 1967, despite an engine failure, he was fourth shortly before the end of the race.
After his short Formula 1 career, Irwin won the Eifel race on the south loop of the Nürburgring in a Formula 2 car in 1968 . Irwin auf Lola-Cosworth drove the 30 laps or 232.410 km in 1: 25.09.8 hours; Second, 25.4 seconds behind, was Kurt Ahrens Jr.
On May 17, 1968, Irwin had a serious accident while training for the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring in the Flugplatz section with his Ford P68 , which he shared with Pedro Rodríguez . After a bump in the ground, the car got under air, took off sharply and overturned. The driver suffered significant head injuries. The fact that the car had a riveted aluminum monocoque, which was state-of-the-art at the time, probably saved its life. After this serious accident, Irwin withdrew completely from motorsport.
Today Irwin lives secluded in Rutland, England .
