The French Grand Prix ( Grand Prix de France , until 1967 also Grand Prix de l'ACF ) is a French motorsport event that has been held since 1906. Until 1967, the races for "the" French Grand Prix were officially referred to as the Grand Prix de l'Automobile Club de France (short: "Grand Prix de l'ACF" ). Even before that, there had been a few races under the title Grand Prix de France , but these did not come close to the Grand Prix de l'ACF as a Grande Épreuve .

The first Formula 1 world championship race, still known as the Grand Prix de l'ACF , took place on July 1, 1950 on the Circuit de Reims-Gueux in Reims in the Marne department in north-eastern France. In 1952, this Grand Prix of the French Automobile Club was held on the Rouen-les-Essarts route. By 1968, Rouen was the venue for this Grand Prix and the French Grand Prix five times, alternating with the Circuit de Reims-Gueux . In the 1967 season , the Formula 1 Grand Prix was held in Le Mans for the only time .

From 1969 to 1973 the races took place alternately on the Circuit de Charade near Clermont-Ferrand and on the Circuit Paul Ricard near Bandol near Toulon in the Var department . 1974 to 1984 alternated the Circuit de Dijon-Prenois near Dijon in the Département Côte-d'Or and the Circuit Paul Ricard . From 1985 to 1990, the Paul Ricard circuit was used exclusively .

From 1991 the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours , about 15 kilometers south of Nevers in the Nièvre department in Burgundy , was a regular venue. On July 24, 2007, after a meeting with French Prime Minister François Fillon , Formula 1 promoter Bernie Ecclestone announced that the route would also be added to the calendar in 2008 and - if no alternative was found - also in 2009. In May 2008, Ecclestone stated in an interview with the French sports newspaper L'Équipe that Magny-Cours would be the last venue for a Formula 1 World Championship race on June 22, 2008, which was also the last Grand Prix of France.

In 2018 the Grand Prix returned to the calendar. The race took place at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet , where a French Grand Prix was last held in 1990 . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the organizers announced in April 2020 that the 2020 race would be canceled.

  1. a b c d e f g h The first race organized as the Grand Prix de l'ACF took place in 1906. In the 1920s, however, the "great" city-to-city races of the early days between 1895 and 1903 were also awarded these titles (see formula1results.co.za , accessed on May 28, 2015), even though the ACF was founded only after the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race in 1895. This counting method made the event of 1906 the officially ninth Grand Prix de l'ACF , and later also the ninth Grand Prix de la France . The 1950 Grand Prix officially started with the 37th edition, from this year the edition numbers are occupied. This numbering was after the 1968 renaming of the Grand Prix de l'ACF for Grand Prix de France continued further throughout.
  2. ↑ The fastest at the finish were the Panhard from Émile Levassor and the Peugeot from Louis Rigolot . However, these were not rated because they were not two-seater cars as required in the tender (see teamdan.com ( memento from September 24, 2015 in the Internet Archive ), accessed on May 28, 2015)
  3. a b c The Automobile Club de l'Ouest organized three races in Le Mans in 1911, 1912 and 1913 under the title Grand Prix de France (Source: Paul Sheldon: A Record of Grand Prix and Voiturette Racing. Volume 1 1900–1925; also formula1results.co.za , formula1results.co.za and formula1results.co.za , each accessed on May 28, 2015). However, these events did not have the same status as the Grands Prix de l'ACF and are still not counted by the Automobile Club de France , whose events carried the title Grand Prix de l'ACF until 1967 .
  4. The French Grand Prix in 1924 also had the AIACR title of European Grand Prix .
  5. a b c d The Grand Prix de l'ACF was held in 1928, 1936, 1937 and 1949 as a sports car race
  6. The Grand Prix de l'ACF was held in 1930 as a formula-free race
  7. The Formula 1 race of 1949 was called Grand Prix de France and was not a Grande Épreuve ! The 36th Grand Prix de l'ACF was a sports car race, held on the Circuit du Comminges in Saint-Gaudens (source: Paul Sheldon, "A Record of Grand Prix and Voiturette Races", Vol. 4 1937–1949; and silhouet. com , accessed May 29, 2015)
