René Hanriot (born June 11, 1867 in Vaite ; † October 6, 1925 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French racing driver and aviation pioneer.

Life

René Hanriot started on Darracq in 1906 . At the Ardennes race he finished second behind Arthur Duray ( Lorraine-Dietrich ). At the French Grand Prix he retired shortly after the start with engine failure.

Hanriot was born in 1907 for Benz & Cie. Third in the Coppa Florio and third in the Coppa della Velocità and fourth in the Ardennes race. In 1908 he finished fourth in the American Grand Prix and third in the French Grand Prix with a 105-hp Benz .

In 1908, René Hanriot tried a Antoinette - monoplane to acquire. Its delivery was delayed so that he decided to build his own aircraft. His company Société des monoplans Hanriot initially ran well, but due to commercial mistakes he had to file for bankruptcy in 1912 . In 1912 he started again at the French Grand Prix and was eliminated in the middle of the race due to a fire.

With the outbreak of the First World War , he founded a new aircraft factory, the Airplanes Hanriot et Cie. He teamed up with Emile Dupont, who had previously developed racing planes at Deperdussin , Ponnier, Morane and Nieuport .

Initially, Hanriot manufactured the British Sopwith 1½ Strutter under license at his plant in Billancourt near Paris . Meanwhile, Dupont designed a single-seater similar to the British Sopwith Pup , which made its first flight in June 1916 as the HD.1 . The machine was not accepted in France, but formed the backbone of the fighter pilot in Italy and Belgium.

By the end of the war his factory had produced around 5,000 aircraft. Although numerous two-seaters were redundant after the end of the war, he achieved another success with the HD.14 school double- decker . About 2100 copies of this type were made in France, and license versions were produced in Poland and Japan. Production continued after his death until 1926. His son Marcel continued to run the company until the French aviation industry was nationalized in 1936.
