Arthur Duray
Arthur Duray (* 9. February 1882 in Ixelles / Elsene , † 11. February 1954 in New York City ) was a French - American racing driver .
Career
Duray was born in Ixelles / Elsene in 1881 to Belgian parents. He himself spent most of his life in France and later also took French citizenship. His racing career spanned almost three decades and included both grands prix and touring car and sports car races .
Duray first appeared at the wheel of a racing car in 1902 , and in 1903 he improved the world speed record for automobiles to 136.4 km / h. In 1904 he drove for Darracq and from 1905 to 1908 for Lorraine-Dietrich . He won the Ardennes race in 1906 with his vehicle and only one defect prevented him from winning the 1907 French Grand Prix . In the following years he tried different brands, including Delage , where he finished 5th in the 1913 French Grand Prix and 8th in the 1914 French Grand Prix . Duray also competed in the Indianapolis 500 mile race , where he finished second in a Peugeot in 1914 .
After the First World War , he primarily competed in touring car races, races in the Voiturette class and sports car races , including several times (1926 to 1928) at the Le Mans 24-hour race . His Ariès sports car, which is prone to defects , was no longer a great success .
Duray announced his retirement from motorsport in 1928 and died in 1954.
