Le Mans 24 hour race, 1928
The sixth 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 6 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also Sixiemes Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit Permanenthe de la Sarthe , took place from 16. to 17 June 1928 on the Circuit des 24 Heures near Le Mans in north-west France.
The race
The dramatic overall victory of the Bentley team Sammy Davis and Dudley Benjafield last year meant that far more British racing teams were interested in the race than in previous years. In addition to the Bentley works team, Lagonda and Aston Martin were represented with works cars for the first time . For the second time, vehicles from the USA came to the Sarthe. Chrysler sent two 72 six to Europe to be used by the French agency. The wheel of the car with the number seven was shared by the Romanian Cantacuzino prince couple. The car with the number eight was driven by André Rossignol and Henri Stoffel . A mighty 4.9 liter Stutz also came from the USA, prepared by Charles Weymann . At the wheel was the 1926 winner , Robert Bloch , and his compatriot Édouard Brisson . The French teams mainly concentrated on the small racing classes.
Right from the start, the race was a three-way battle between Bentley, Chrysler and Stutz. Different teams replaced one another at the top and the lap record was broken several times. The Ariès , the French car with the largest displacement, was only able to keep up for three laps , then the team retired with piston damage. Sir Henry Birkin had a puncture and lost more than three hours and with it every chance of victory. During the night Stutz was in the lead, but was plagued by problems with the transmission on Sunday morning. While the Birkin / Chassagne-Bentley was brilliantly catching up, both Lagondas collided in the Mulsanne and retired.
It was only at the last refueling stop that Woolf Barnato was able to overtake the leading Stutz, but he was in big trouble himself. The chassis of the Bentley was broken and Barnato could only roll around the track at slow speed. His victory was saved by the fact that Brisson in the Stutz only drove in one gear and could no longer catch up. Barnato won by just half a lap, and Bentley was able to celebrate its third overall victory.
