Le Mans 24 hour race 1933
The eleventh 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 11 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from June 17 to 18, 1933 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .
The race
29 vehicles were set up for the Le Mans start on Saturday morning on June 17th . The field was dominated by Alfa Romeo sports cars . The two plant - 8C had the short chassis of the Mille Miglia version. The Italian top driver Tazio Nuvolari joined the team for last year's winner Raymond Sommer . Luigi Chinetti , a partner of Sommer the year before , drove the second works car, with Frenchman Philippe de Gunsburg as a partner. The private Alfas included Louis Chiron , Franco Cortese and the young Algerian Guy Moll .
The car with the largest displacement was the 6.9-liter Duesenberg of the Romanian Prince Nikolaus . Jean Trévoux went back to the old Birkin - Bentley , and the marks Singer and Riley gave their Le Mans debut.
In the first phase of the race, both the Bentley and the Duesenberg were able to keep up with Raymond Sommer's fast initial pace. But the trip from Trévoux ended in the run-off zone of the Mulsanne, where the Bentley got stuck after a spin. And since the Duesenberg was refueled too early, the Romanian prince had to be disqualified.
During the night a three-way battle developed between the summer, the Chinetti and the Chiron teams. When Nuvolari lost 16 minutes in the pits because the fuel tank leaked, Cortese took the lead. When Cortese had a serious accident just before the end, the last hour turned into one of the most exciting in Le Mans history. With eight minutes to go, the leading Nuvolari had to pit again because he was losing fuel again, and Chinetti was able to pass him. Nuvolari took up chase and the lead changed three times on the final lap. When Chinetti tried to overtake again just before the finish, he was blocked by a slower vehicle and almost lost control of the Alfa Romeo. Nuvolari won by 10 seconds. Before the race, Chinetti had been promised a winner's bonus of 60,000 francs by a sponsor , which he received for second place overall thanks to his courageous driving style.
Odette Siko had a serious accident when she lost control of her Alfa Romeo in the Arnage curve. The car felled several trees, stayed on the roof and caught fire. Madame Siko got away with a broken arm, but never competed at Le Mans again.
