The 54th 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 54 ^s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , and 24 Heures du Mans Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , was held from May 31 to June 1, 1986 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .

The race

When the 24-hour race was waved off, nine Porsche brand vehicles were among the top ten in the overall standings . Only the Gebhardt JC843 from Ian Harrower , Evan Clements and Tom Dodd-Noble , who came in eighth , ensured that the top ten did not only consist of Porsche racing cars. The works cars and vehicles of the other Porsche teams faced strong competition in the C1 class . The team of Tom Walkinshaw , the factory operations of Jaguar developed, sent three XJR-6 into the race. The cars, powered by a 6-liter V12 engine, were driven by the driver teams Derek Warwick / Eddie Cheever / Jean-Louis Schlesser , Gianfranco Brancatelli / Win Percy / Hurley Haywood as well as Brian Redman and Hans Heyer .

The first hours of racing were marked by the duel Klaus Ludwig in Joest - Porsche 956B against the plant - Porsche 962 . One of the two works cars broke down the night Jochen Mass had an accident on an oil trail. The race was overshadowed by Jo Gartner's fatal accident during the night. On June 1, around 3:12 a.m., the Austrian hit the left guardrail with his Porsche 962 on the Hunaudières straight at a speed of more than 300 km / h. The car overturned and came to a stop on the opposite side of the track, where it burned out. Gartner died at the scene of the accident. The cause of the accident could not be clearly clarified; a broken rear suspension is assumed. As a long-term consequence of the accident, the Hunaudières straight was divided into three sections from 1990 by two chicanes in order to ensure lower maximum speeds and more safety.

The race was won by the works Porsche 962c owned by Derek Bell , Hans-Joachim Stuck and Al Holbert .
