Jean-Louis Schlesser (born September 12, 1948 in Nancy ) is a French all-round automobile racing driver , two-time winner of the World Sports Car Championship ( 1989 and 1990 ) and two-time winner of the Dakar Rally ( 1999 and 2000 ) as well as the organizer of the Africa Eco Race .
Career
In 1978 Schlesser won the French Formula 3 championship .
In the Formula 1 Schlesser was less successful. In 1983 he bought two races from the British team RAM Racing . In April he contested the Race of Champions in RAM 01 , a Formula 1 race without world championship status. Without having completed a timed lap in qualifying training, Schlesser was admitted to the race as the 13th and last driver. He finished sixth at Brands Hatch . Before that, six pre-placed drivers were canceled. A week later, RAM entered him alongside Eliseo Salazar for the French Grand Prix . Schlesser missed the qualification here. He was 0.7 seconds slower than his team-mate, who also failed to qualify, and was 9.1 seconds ahead of Alain Prost's ( Renault ) pole time . Schlesser then gave up Formula 1 because he could not raise the funds required by RAM for further racing. Five years later, Schlesser returned to Formula 1. At the 1988 Italian Grand Prix in Monza he took part in the Williams for the sick Nigel Mansell and drove from 22nd on the grid to 11th place. His collision with Ayrton Senna was especially remembered.
From 1988 bis 1991 drove Schlesser at Sauber - Mercedes in the World Sportscar Championship and in 1988 vice-champion and 1989 and 1990, together with Mauro Baldi to the group-C - Silver Arrows of Mercedes sports car world champion. Schlesser started seven times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans , twice from pole position .
He won the Dakar Rally in 1999 and 2000 with Schlesser buggies developed in-house. He is currently taking part in a Schlesser Original X.223 powered by a GM engine in various rally raid events such as the Africa Eco Race , which he won for the fourth time in a row in 2012. His current co-pilot is the Russian Konstantin Zhilstov.
