The 52nd 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 52 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from 16 to 17 June 1984 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .

The race

Before the start

After the FISA had again drawn up new regulations for the sports car world championship for 1984 , which not only opened the races in Europe for the vehicles of the IMSA-GTP series , but also led to a 15% reduction in fuel consumption, the Porsche waived Factory team on a line-up at Le Mans.

The Stuttgart brand was prominently represented by the two German private teams Joest and Kremer Racing . In addition there were the racing teams of John Fitzpatrick and Walter Brun as well as other teams from Germany, Great Britain and France, all of whom used the tried and tested Porsche 956 as an emergency vehicle.

Lancia brought three LC2s to the Sarthe, powered by a 3-liter Ferrari turbo engine. The Jaguar brand made a comeback at Le Mans after many years of absence.

The Formula 1 world champion from 1980, Australian Alan Jones , made his Le Mans debut and the winner of 1970 , Richard Attwood , after 13 years of absence a comeback at Aston Martin .

Race course

The Frenchman Roger Dorchy had the best start in the World Championship P83 from Welter Racing and led the field into the first lap. It was the first time a Welter racing car was driven in the 24-hour race. However, it only took one lap before pole setter Alessandro Nannini took the lead. The eventual winner Henri Pescarolo had an unscheduled pit stop after just eleven minutes to have a defective fuel pump repaired. The Frenchman fell back to the bottom of the field and was the last to return to the track. After three hours, Pescarolo's team-mate Klaus Ludwig had to go to the pits for another repair and lost 14 minutes because the left suspension had to be replaced. At 9 p.m. in the evening the duo had made it back to the top ten in the overall standings and at 7 a.m. on Sunday morning the Joest-Porsche was in the lead for the first time.

Shortly after dark, a serious accident occurred on the Les Hunaudieres straight that claimed a fatality. John Sheldon had lost control of his Aston Martin at high speed and collided with his teammate Drake Olson's car . A marshals were fatally injured by flying parts. Sheldon suffered severe burns but got away with his life.

The long leading works Lancia owned by Nannini and Bob Wollek had to complain about the loss of fifth gear on Sunday and only crossed the finish line in eighth. The last few hours turned into a gauntlet run for the Joest-Porsche, as problems with the left-hand suspension kept cropping up, which made several pit stops necessary. At the finish, however, the car was still two laps ahead of the Porsche of Jean Rondeau and John Paul Jr. For Henri Pescarolo, it was the fourth overall victory at Le Mans after his success with Matra in the 1970s.

Both Jaguars failed with technical defects. All four Wankel racing cars, including two Mazda 727C , crossed the finish line.
