Richard Lloyd (born February 18, 1945 , † March 30, 2008 in London-Farnborough ) was a British racing driver and motorsport team owner.

Career

Richard Lloyd started his career in 1967 and gained racing experience in several motorsport races with sports cars such as the Triumph Spitfire , Morgan 4/4 Super and Lotus Elan Sprint until 1971 .

In 1974 and 1975 he drove his first long-distance races in the sports car class of the sports car world championship with a Chevron B23, March 74S and most recently with a Lola T294 in a race in the 2-liter sports car European championship . After a long break, he returned to the sports car world championship in 1981 with a Porsche 924 GTR . With his Canon Cameras Racing / GTi Engineering team , he drove the car there in the GT and from 1982 to the beginning of 1983 in the IMSA GTO class. With his team drivers Andy Rouse , Tony Dron and Jonathan Palmer , he achieved class victory in four races. From 1983 to the end of his active racing career in 1985 continued Lloyd the Porsche 956 in the Group C one. With drivers Jan Lammers , Jonathan Palmer and Nick Mason , he was able to place regularly in the top ten.

His greatest motorsport success was second place in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1985 , which he celebrated with Jonathan Palmer and James Weaver . After this race, Lloyd ended his racing career.

From 1976 to 1982 he also competed in the European Touring Car Championship . There he first drove with the Opel Commodore GS and BMW 530i until he switched to Volkswagen sports cars, mainly VW Golf GTI , from the end of 1977 , and from 1980 to the Audi 80 GTE and Audi 80 GLE . Lloyd won his first class win of his career with Tom Walkinshaw and Gilbert Greenall in 1977 at the Nürburgring Grand Prix of touring cars. There he and his teammates finished in tenth place and achieved first place in the 4th division. His best place in the racing series was third overall and first place in the 2nd division in the 500 km race at Brands Hatch in 1978 with Anton Stocker in a VW Scirocco .

Lloyd died on March 30, 2008 shortly after taking off from London's Biggin Hill Airport in a business jet. All five occupants, including David Leslie , died after the pilot of the Cessna Citation aircraft discovered problems with the engines and the attempted emergency landing failed.
