1982 Le Mans 24 hour race
The 50th 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 50 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from 19 to 20 June 1982 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .
The race
New regulations
Once again, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest changed the regulations of the 24-hour race. The aim was to further reduce the high average speed without interfering with the technology of the vehicles. 1981 won the plant - Porsche 936 , driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell , h with an average of over 200 km /. The capacity of the vehicle tanks was limited to a maximum of 100 liters and the maximum number of refueling stops was set at 25.
Racing classes
The race was open to vehicles of Group C and the new Group B . However, only one racing car was registered in this racing class, a Porsche 930 from the Gadal brothers from France, which could not qualify the vehicle. 1982 was a year of transition, so that racing cars in Groups 4, 5 and 6 were still eligible to compete. Then there were the US racing classes IMSA-GT and IMSA-GTX.
The teams
28 of the 55 cars registered at the start were Group C prototypes. Porsche brought three completely redesigned prototypes to Le Mans. Changes to the regulations made it clear in 1981 that the open-top Porsche 936 could no longer be used in the 1982 sports car world championship . A completely new racing car concept was implemented at Porsche with the 956 . Since the tubular frames used up to now were no longer up to date, an aluminum chassis in a shell construction was constructed for the first time. The engine was derived from the Porsche Interscope engine and developed 445 kW (620 hp). The three cars were driven by the teams Jacky Ickx / Derek Bell, Jochen Mass / Vern Schuppan and Hurley Haywood / Al Holbert . Reinhold Joest converted a Porsche 936 so that it complied with Group C regulations. This car was driven by Bob Wollek and the Belgian Martin brothers.
Ford came back to Le Mans for the first time since the 1960s. The two C100s were assembled at Zakspeed in Niederzissen . According to Ford Germany , Manfred Winkelhock , Klaus Niedzwiedz , Klaus Ludwig and Marc Surer drove the two cars. From France were six Rondeau at the start, including three works cars of Jean Rondeau even the factory team continued the. M382 and all rondeaus had Cosworth - V8 engines as the engines. After a few years of absence, Gand Touring Cars also returned to Le Mans. The newly designed Mirage M12 was driven by Mario Andretti and his son Mike . Already built for the group C were the WM P82 of Welter Racing , while the plant - Lancia LC1 of Piercarlo Ghinzani , Riccardo Patrese and Hans Heyer nor the Group 6 corresponded.
The car with the most powerful engine was the Chevrolet Camaro by Billy Hagan and Gene Felton with a 5.7-liter Chevrolet -Aggregat. The factory Mazda RX-7 had a 1.3-liter rotary engine .
The Mirage scandal
Mario and Mike Andretti qualified the Mirage M12 in ninth place, but the team could not take part in the race. 20 minutes before the start, the Mirage had long been at its starting point, ACO technical delegates told a completely astonished team leadership that the car could be illegal and could not start. What was not objected to in any of the technical inspections suddenly became a problem. The transmission oil cooler was installed behind the transmission. The officials suddenly insisted that it should be above the gearbox. What followed was a farce and went down in the history of this race as one of the most inglorious actions of the ACO. The technicians from Grand Touring Cars were able to carry out the conversion at short notice. While the mechanics were working on the boxes, the ACO disqualified the car and allowed the first reserve to move up. When the race started, the Mirage was in the pits in accordance with the rules and was not allowed to start. Team boss Harley Cluxton then had the car pushed in front of the race control area and stood there in the pit lane for hours. His protest was dismissed. It was the last appearance of a Mirage racing car at Le Mans.
The course of the race
The three works Porsches dominated the race right from the start. Only the Rondeaus and the Ford C100 were able to keep up in the initial phase, but Porsche's overall victory was never in danger over the 24 hours and the race ended with a triple victory for the works team. There was only trouble with the drivers. In the early evening hours, Hurley Haywood lost the driver's door when he checked at full speed whether it was closed. The door jumped open and was swept away by the wind. At this point, the number 3 car was in the lead, but dropped to seventh after a lengthy repair. During the night, Haywood suffered a circulatory collapse and was taken out of the race by the Porsche doctors. Substitute driver Jürgen Barth came into the car for him .
