Hurley Haywood
Hurley Haywood (born May 4, 1948 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a former American automobile racing driver and three-time winner of the Le Mans 24-hour race .
Career
Hurley Haywood is one of the most successful sports car drivers in motorsport history. The American's list of successes is almost endless. In addition to his three Le Mans victories, he triumphed five times at the Daytona 24-hour race , making it the record winner in this race. He celebrated his first victory at Daytona in 1973 with Peter Gregg in the Porsche 911. Gregg was not only linked by a lifelong friendship and racing partnership. Haywood was also involved in the chain of auto dealerships Gregg had built in Florida . He also won Daytona in 1975, 1977, 1979 and 1991. In 1973 and 1981 he also won the overall classification of the Sebring 12-hour race . He won the IMSA GT championship twice and the Trans-Am sports car championship once.
Haywood is one of the most successful Le Mans starters. He won the overall standings three times, and celebrated his first victory in 1977 when he drove a works Porsche 936/77 as a partner of Jacky Ickx and Jürgen Barth . Successes followed in 1983 and 1994. In 1980 he was also at the 500-mile race in Indianapolis at the start and finished the race in eighteenth.
In 1970 he was drafted into the US Army and served a year in the Vietnam War . After Peter Gregg's death in 1980, he took over the management of the automotive company and has been running the business ever since. He is also chief instructor at the Porsche Sport Driving School at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham . Until 2012 he competed in the Daytona 24-hour race every year.
His sister Hope was with race car driver, racing team owner and convicted drug dealer John Paul senior married.
