Sebring 12 hour race in 1993
The 41st Sebring 12 Hours of Sebring , also known as the Camel 12 Hours of Sebring, Sebring International Raceway , took place on March 20, 1993 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the fourth round of the IMSA GTP series of that year.
Before the race
The first race of the IMSA GTP-season , the 24 Hours of Daytona , won PJ Jones , Rocky Moran and Mark Dismore on one of Dan Gurney reported Eagle MkIII . While the following race, the 1.45-hour race in Miami, was won by an Eagle with Juan Manuel Fangio II at the wheel , Paul Gentilozzi in an Oldsmobile Cutlass triumphed in round three, the GT race in Miami .
The race
One of the special features of the IMSA-GTP races, covered by the regulations at the time, was that a driver was also allowed to be registered for two different teams and consequently could start for them. In 1993 the German racing driver Ronny Meixner was registered for both Morrison Motorsports and Cigarette Racing . For Morrison, he and his teammates drove a Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 in 15th place overall, and for Cigarette he finished seventeenth overall with a Porsche 911 Carrera 2 .
The cost increases, which were accelerated by the entry of the Japanese manufacturers Nissan and Toyota into series production , made themselves felt further in 1993. As fewer and fewer teams were able to raise the financial resources for the sprint and endurance races , the number of participants in the registered racing teams continued to decline. Above all, the race lost the always welcome and committed private teams. The big fields of the late 1980s, when more than 70 cars entered the race, were finally history. The only serious opponent for the two Gurney Eagle's, which were powered by a 4-cylinder Toyota turbo engine, was a three-year-old Nissan NPT-90 used by Giampiero Moretti . The Joest - Porsche 962 C was given no chance of overall victory, assuming a normal race course.
Already in training the Eagle were clearly superior and Fangio drove the best training time. The 1: 46.135 minutes corresponded to an average of 201.973 km / h. There was heavy rain during the race and for the first time in history it had to be interrupted with the red flag . The teams had to wait in the pits for almost two hours before the weather improved so much that a continuation could be considered. Without any technical problems and with a clear lead, Fangio and Andy Wallace repeated their victory from last year.
