Sebring 12 hour race 2013
The 61st Sebring 12-hour race , also the 61st Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida, Sebring International Raceway , took place on March 16, 2013 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the first race of the ALMS season 2013 .
Before the race
After only one year as a race of the FIA World Endurance Championship , Sebring lost its status as a World Championship run again in 2013. Therefore, the 2013 race was only part of the American Le Mans Series . This year was the last time LMP1 vehicles competed in Sebring.
The race
Although no world championship points were awarded, Audi entered the Audi R18 e-tron quattro one last time . The two racing cars were driven by the driver trios Benoît Tréluyer / Marcel Fässler / Oliver Jarvis and Tom Kristensen / Allan McNish / Lucas di Grassi . In the car with the number 1, Jarvis replaced the indispensable André Lotterer . At the number 2, di Grassi joined the team permanently for the retired Rinaldo Capello . Two more LMP1 cars came from Rebellion Racing in Switzerland. The two Lola B12 / 60s , powered by a Toyota 3.4 liter V8 engine, were driven by Nick Heidfeld , Nicolas Prost , Neel Jani , Andrea Belicchi , Mathias Beche and Cheng Congfu . Dyson Racing reported another Lola B12 / 60, which, unlike the Rebellion car, had a 2-liter, 4-cylinder in-line engine from Mazda that ran on biobutanol .
The most interesting vehicle in this Le Mans prototype class was the DeltaWing . The DeltaWing was developed to significantly optimize the aerodynamics of a vehicle and thus improve the speed on the straights and in the corners. As the name suggests, it had a delta wing shape, with an unusually narrow track at the front (0.60 m) and a more traditional track at the rear (1.70 m). The vehicle was missing any front or rear wings, and the downforce was generated from the underbody. It was powered by a four-cylinder turbo engine with direct injection (1600 cm³, 300 hp) from the Japanese manufacturer Nissan . The motor delivered a constant torque of 310 Nm at 4000 to 6750 revolutions per minute. The accelerator pedal was controlled by drive-by-wire .
The two Audis were without opponents in the race, but the finish was close. Just 7.6 seconds separated the victorious number 1 from the sister car. In the early stages, Allan McNish received a 60-second stop-and-go penalty after a collision with an LMPC car , which was ultimately decisive for the race. The driver trio almost made up for the deficit until the end, but it wasn't enough to win. Heidfeld, Prost and Jani finished third overall, six laps behind the problem-free Rebellion Toyota.
