Patrick Dempsey
Patrick Galen Dempsey (born January 13, 1966 in Lewiston , Maine ) is an American actor and racing driver . He was best known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd in the ABC - TV series Gray's Anatomy .
Life
Childhood and youth
Dempsey grew up in Lewiston, where he attended St. Dominic's Regional High School. Dempsey later graduated from Buckfield High School in Buckfield, Maine. Dempsey was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of twelve . At the 2008 Academy Awards , he stated that this weakness made him what he is today.
Patrick Dempsey participated in juggling competitions in his youth. In 1981 he was able to achieve second place in the junior division of the World Jugglers' Association , just one place behind Anthony Gatto , who is considered the best technical juggler of all time. Dempsey dreamed of being a clown in the circus ring and before his stage career worked as a juggler , magician and puppeteer .
Patrick Dempsey also took part in ski competitions.

From 1987 to 1994 he was married to his manager, Rocky Parker, who was 27 years his senior and the mother of his best friend Corey Parker . In 1999 he married the make-up artist Jillian Fink, with whom he has three children. In mid-January 2015, the two filed for divorce. The relationship was resumed in mid-2016.

Racing - the great passion
Car racing means a lot to the actor and he says it is his real passion, but he also enjoys being on set. In addition, he is active as a racing driver in his spare time and competed in the Daytona 24-hour race in 2008 .
On June 13 and 14, 2009 he took part in the 24-hour race of Le Mans for the Seattle Advanced Engineering team with a Ferrari F430 GT in the GT2 class. In 2013 he again took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, this time with his own team, Dempsey Racing, which he founded in 2003, and achieved 4th place in his class. In 2008, Patrick Dempsey opened an information center for cancer patients and their families in his hometown, the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing . One of the reasons for this was his mother's cancer in 1998.
Tully's Coffee
Dempsey and his investment firm acquired the “Tully's Coffee” chain in Seattle. The actor has offered around nine million dollars (about 6.8 million euros) for the chain with 47 branches and 500 employees and thus also thrown the coffee giant Starbucks out of the running.
Career
Beginnings at the theater and first film appearances
At the age of 15 he had his first stage role in a Maine production of "On Golden Pond". Two years later he got the lead role in "Torch Song Trilogy," in which he played a gay teenager and toured San Francisco with the show. Meanwhile, he was on the ABC family show Overnight Success, where he was juggling and singing for the best. Further theater engagements followed, including in New York.
After minor appearances as part of the Maine Acting Company and an engagement at the Roundabout Theater in New York , he received his first film role with Die Himmelstürmer (1985). He won the Young Artist Award for his role in Can't Buy Me Love (1987) .
Breakthrough in the early 1990s
In 1991 he made his breakthrough with the film The Real Bosses - A Devilish Empire . In 1995 he starred in the hit sci-fi drama Outbreak - Silent Killer . He then took on roles in various TV films, such as the remake of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" or as the young Kennedy in the two-part TV series "John F. Kennedy - Wild Youth". Its success waned a little towards the end of the 1990s.
Career boom in the mid-2000s
A career boom in 2000 brought him the recurring role as Will's love affair Matthew on the sitcom Will & Grace, as well as another recurring guest role on Once & Again as Lily and Judy's schizophrenic brother Aaron. For this role, Dempsey received an Emmy nomination. He also returned to the big screen that year, starring in a supporting role in the horror comedy Scream 3 . Patrick Dempsey achieved his greatest success in his role as neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepherd in the ABC series Grey's Anatomy , which he played since 2005. The role earned him two Golden Globe nominations and numerous advertising contracts. In May 2011 Dempsey announced in an interview with the Italian edition of the US magazine "Vanity Fair" that he was leaving the series after the eighth season. He regrets this step, but does not see himself further in this role. On the same day, a spokesman for the actor stated that these statements were out of context and that Dempsey's future on the show was not clear. Dempsey also appears in the ninth, tenth and eleventh seasons. At the end of the eleventh season, Dempsey dropped out of the series.

Patrick Dempsey was the advertising face for L'Oreal, Versace and for the Serengeti sunglasses. In November 2008 he launched his first perfume "Unscripted". Because of the great success he brought out a second "Patrick Dempsey 2" in 2009. Since 2013 he has been the advertising face for Silhouette Eyewear.
