The Audi R18 e-tron quattro with starting number 1 on the way to the pit stop

The winning car Audi R18 e-tron quattro No. 2 from McNish / Kristensen / Duval and the winner's trophy at the IAA 2013

The 81st 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 81 ^e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from 22 to 23 June 2013 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .

The race

The Danish racing driver Allan Simonsen had an accident on the third lap around 3:09 p.m. local time. When accelerating out of the Tertre Rouge, Simonsen, who had been in the lead in his class up to that point, lost control of his Aston Martin Vantage on the partially wet track, turned 180 degrees and hit the guardrails that were not secured by tire stacks with the passenger side. Shortly after the impact, he was initially still accessible. However, he died of cardiac arrest on the way to the Center médical du Circuit. Resuscitation attempts initiated by the racing doctor Alain Kind were in vain.

Subsequent investigations at the point of impact at the accident site revealed that there was a tree immediately behind the guardrail. As a result, the guardrail could not deform and thus reduce the force of the impact. The impact was so hard that parts of the tree bark were torn off. At 5:59 p.m. Simonsen's death was announced in the press center. After the accident, discussions about the route safety of the Circuit des 24 Heures were rekindled. Since the accident occurred on a public road, the French authorities also investigated.

After a driving time of 24 hours, Tom Kristensen , Allan McNish and Loïc Duval won in their Audi R18 e-tron quattro with starting number 2.

Start list

On February 1, 2013, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, as the organizer, published a preliminary start list with 56 participants plus ten reserve teams. In the period that followed, there were several changes due to cancellations and participants moving up. Among other things, the mention of the experimental vehicle , the fuel cell vehicle Green GT H2 , was withdrawn.
