Toni Vilander
Toni Markus Vilander (born July 25, 1980 in Kankaanpää ) is a Finnish racing driver .
Career
At the age of five, Vilander began his karting career and won several championships. In 2002 he moved into the single-seater racing and was fifth in the Italian Formula Renault . He also competed in a Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup race and finished second in the Italian Formula Renault winter series. In 2003, Vilander also drove in the Italian Formula Renault and this time achieved third place in the overall standings. He also drove in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, in which he finally finished 14th in the overall classification. In addition, the Vilander started in a race in the Italian Formula 3 Championship, where he achieved a podium finish.
In 2004 Vilander drove a full season in the Italian Formula 3 championship and was runner-up in this series with six wins. In addition, Vilander took part in some races in the Formula 3 Euro Series for Coloni . In 2005 Vilander was active in the Italian Formula 3000 championship and finished the season in fourth place in the overall standings. Vilander also made his debut in the GP2 series . Coloni had separated from Gianmaria Bruni and Vilander was signed as a replacement. He took part in two race weekends and remained without points. For the last race of the season, Vilander was replaced by Ferdinando Monfardini . In addition, he competed in the Italian GT championship and won the GT2 classification.
In 2006, Vilander switched to GT racing. He became champion in GT1 of the Italian GT Championship and also took part in races in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), the FIA GT Championship and the Spanish GT Championship. In 2007 Vilander started together with Dirk Müller for AF Corse in a Ferrari 430 GT2 in the GT2 class of the FIA GT Championship. The two won six out of ten races and won the GT2 standings. A season later , he repeated the title win in the GT2 class of the FIA GT Championship. This time Gianmaria Bruni was his teammate. Vilander also made his debut for AF Corse at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . In 2009 Vilander and Bruni failed to defend their title and were runner-up behind Richard Westbrook with 54 to 56 points . In addition, Vilander took part in a race in the Le Mans Series .
After the FIA GT Championship was discontinued, Vilander entered the 2010 Le Mans Series and the ALMS. In both series he achieved podium finishes. In the Le Mans Series, he finished second in the LMGT2 class together with Jean Alesi and Giancarlo Fisichella . In the ALMS he reached eleventh place in the GT2 classification. He also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA GT2 European Cup . In 2011, Vilander was again active in the ALMS and the Le Mans Series in parallel. In both series he won a race in his class. He finished fourth in the LMGTE-Pro classification of the Le Mans Series and sixth in the GT2 classification of the ALMS. At the 24-hour race at Le Mans , he and Bruni and Fisichella took second place in the LMGTE Pro classification.
In 2012 , Vilander competed for AF Corse in the FIA GT1 World Championship . His teammate is Filip Salaquarda . In addition, Vilander took part in a race of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). In this he finished 35th in the drivers' championship after the first race. He also started a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series .
Personal
Vilander got to know the former Formula 1 world champion Kimi Räikkönen in 1991 at kart races. Both have been close friends since they went karting together. In addition, Vilander is a friend of Robert Kubica .
