Gianmaria Bruni (born May 30, 1981 in Rome ) is an Italian racing driver . He started in Formula 1 for the Minardi team in 2004 and drove in the GP2 series from 2005 to 2006 .

Career

In order to start a career as an amateur kart driver at the age of 10 , even though the minimum age to compete was 12, he lied to the then director of La Pista d'Oro , a kart circuit in Rome, about his age.

He gained his first experience as a racing driver in 1997 in the Italian Formula Renault . In 1998 he won the title and rose to the European Formula Renault. He won the European title in 1999, after which he devoted himself to British Formula 3 , which brought him fifth in 2000 and fourth in 2001. After other similar European series, it caught the attention of Minardi, who tested it in 2003; the bigger hurdle in his career, however, was to raise enough financial support for Minardi in 2004 to participate.

Although Bruni eventually got a cockpit at Minardi and took part in the 2004 Formula 1 World Championship , he had to make do with a car that was decidedly less advanced than most of the other participants. He and only one other participant this season did not score any World Championship points.

In 2005 Bruni drove in the GP2 series , a formula championship included in the F1 support package and intended as a junior series. He won his first GP2 race in Barcelona on May 7th. Shortly before the races in Monza in September, he left the Coloni GP2 team and joined the Durango team , where he took a pole position for the next event at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium .

In 2006 , Bruni also started in Formula GP2. This time he competed with the Trident Racing team. He won the races at Imola and Hockenheim and finished the season in seventh place.

In 2007 he switched to the FIA GT Championship , where he competed with the AF Corse team in the GT2 class. He finished the 2007 season together with his teammate Stéphane Ortelli after three victories in third place overall. In the 2008 season , Bruni will also compete in the FIA GT Championship. With his new team-mate Toni Vilander , he won the GT2 class title after five class wins. At the same time, Bruni competed in the Le Mans Series with Robert Bell . Bruni won three of the five championship races with Bell, but at the last race at Silverstone the race calendars of both series collided. Bruni decided in favor of the FIA GT and was therefore only runner-up behind team-mate Bell. In the 2009 Le Mans Series season he continued to form a driver pairing with Bell and won two 1000 km races in the GT2 class, but still finished the championship behind Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz . At the same time, he continued to compete in the FIA GT with Toni Vilander and although he finished the drivers' championship behind Richard Westbrook , he contributed to winning the AF Corse team championship with several class wins.
