Reports

background

After the Italian Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings unassailable with 38 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 65 points ahead of Jenson Button . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 140 points unassailable from BAR-Honda and with 143 points ahead of Renault .

Ralf Schumacher returned to his Williams cockpit after an injury break and replaced Antonio Pizzonia . At Renault, Jarno Trulli was replaced by Jacques Villeneuve . At Jordan , Giorgio Pantano was replaced by Timo Glock .

training

Several teams were allowed to deploy a third driver on Friday practice. Anthony Davidson (BAR-Honda), Björn Werdenheim ( Jaguar-Cosworth ), Ryan Briscoe ( Toyota ), Robert Doornbos (Jordan-Cosworth) and Bas Leinders ( Minardi-Cosworth ) took part in the Friday training sessions. In the first free practice, Davidson set the fastest lap ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya . In the second free practice, Davidson kept the top position in front of his teammate Button and Kimi Raikkonen . From the third free practice, only the regular pilots were allowed to be used. Ralf Schumacher set the fastest time ahead of his team mate Montoya and his brother Michael Schumacher. In the fourth free practice session, Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher took the lead in front of his team mates Barrichello and Raikkonen.

Qualifying

In the first qualifying, in which the starting positions for the second qualifying were determined, Michael Schumacher achieved the fastest lap ahead of Raikkonen and Giancarlo Fisichella . In qualifying, Barrichello achieved the fastest lap and took pole position from Raikkonen and Button. Michael Schumacher spun in his fast lap and gave up without time at the pits. The Bridgestone tires worked particularly well in this section and so Sauber pilot Felipe Massa achieved fourth place, the best starting position of his career up to that point.

run

Michael Schumacher started out of the pit lane after changing the engine during the night and started the race with a full tank of fuel. Barrichello maintained his lead at the start of the race in front of Raikkonen. Fernando Alonso took third place. In the twelfth lap there was a collision between Michael Schumacher and Christian Klien . While Schumacher could continue, the race was over for Klien.

After Toyota driver Ricardo Zonta retired with a gearbox failure, Ralf Schumacher had to give up the race after a collision with David Coulthard . A little later, Minardi driver Gianmaria Bruni , who had lost a bike, also retired.

At the top there was a tactical duel between Barrichello, Button and Raikkonen. While Button stopped twice, his two opponents had to pit three times. Shortly before the end of the race there was a duel between Michael Schumacher and Villeneuve for eleventh position, in which the German overtook the Canadian. In the end, however, he could not benefit from it as he still had to make another pit stop. However, Michael Schumacher managed to achieve the fastest lap.

Eventually Barrichello won the race for the second time this season. Button was second ahead of Raikkonen. The other points went to Alonso, Montoya, Takuma Satō , Fisichella and Massa.

With his victory, Barrichello secured the runner-up in the world championship behind Schumacher for the second time in his career. The third-placed button couldn't be caught either. With the designers, BAR-Honda increased the gap to Renault in the duel for second place behind Ferrari.
