All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Albon could not take part in free practice after his accident, Antonio Giovinazzi was also unable to drive a timed lap due to a technical defect. Both did not qualify for the Grand Prix, but were allowed to start because they had been sufficiently fast in free practice. Bottas was the fastest. In addition to Albon and Giovinazzi, the Williams drivers and Stroll were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Both Mercedes and Ferrari drivers as well as Verstappen achieved their fastest lap times on the medium compound, all the others on soft . Hamilton was fastest. The McLaren drivers, Raikkonen, Pérez and Daniil Kwjat were eliminated.

run

Verstappen and Robert Kubica spun on the warm-up lap when they were inattentive to warm up the tires. However, both drove on and started the race from their starting positions.

At the start, Hamilton took the lead from Bottas, Leclerc overtook Vettel. Pérez started well and overtook Kwjat, both Haas drivers and Hülkenberg on the first lap. Shortly afterwards, Kwjat Sainz and then Lando Norris touched midfield , both McLaren were damaged in the process, fell back to the end of the field and pitted for repairs at the end of the lap. The race management called out the virtual safety car to salvage the debris lying on the track . Hamilton led before Bottas, Leclerc, Vettel, Verstappen, Gasly, Ricciardo, Pérez, Hülkenberg and Grosjean.

Kvyat received a drive-through penalty for causing the collision with Sainz and Norris, which he faced at the end of the seventh lap. He also got two penalty points. At the direction of the command post, Leclerc let Vettel pass on lap eleven. From the tenth lap onwards, the drivers who started on the soft compound had problems with the performance of their tires. Raikkonen, who started on Medium , overtook both Haas drivers and Hulkenberg. All three drivers drove into the pits and switched to Hard , Hulkenberg fell behind Grosjean, who had stopped one lap earlier.

Vettel was unable to break away from Leclerc, he braked several times and after 13 laps was already more than ten seconds behind Hamilton. On lap 16, Hülkenberg parked his vehicle in the pits. On lap 17, Verstappen switched to Hard , he came back on the track in eighth place immediately before Raikkonen. He passed Pérez on the same lap. Vettel switched to Hard one lap later , staying just ahead of Verstappen. Verstappen attacked Vettel, but braked himself, so that Vettel passed again. Pérez switched to Hard on lap 20 .

On lap 21 Bottas pitted and switched to Hard . He only lost one position to Leclerc. A lap later, Hamilton and Leclerc switched to Hard . Hamilton stayed in the lead, Leclerc fell behind Vettel and Verstappen. Gasly overtook Raikkonen, who had not yet been to the pits to change tires, and was now in sixth place.

On the fresh laps, Bottas drove the fastest lap of the race to date and reduced the gap to Hamilton, which had already been more than five seconds, to less than 1.5 seconds. However, when Hamilton's tires were up to temperature after two laps, he pulled away from Bottas again.

Raikkonen switched to Hard on lap 25 , he fell behind Magnussen and was now eleventh. However, he immediately overtook Magnussen and moved up to tenth place. In the following laps he caught up with Grosjean and overtook him on lap 29.

Leclerc reduced the gap to Verstappen with several fast laps, he sometimes caught up a second per lap. Verstappen changed tires again on lap 34, this time to medium . Vettel pitted a lap later and switched to medium , staying well ahead of Verstappen. Hamilton and Bottas also switched to medium again on lap 36 . Hamilton stayed just ahead of Leclerc, Bottas came back four seconds behind the Ferrari driver.

Vettel drove the fastest lap of the race to date, catching up three seconds on Leclerc within one lap. Bottas had caught up with Leclerc and attacked him, but Leclerc initially defended himself. One lap later, Bottas then passed. Vettel also caught up with Leclerc and passed, Leclerc then switched to medium on lap 42 . Kvyat gave up the race on the same lap. Norris also parked his car in the pits a few laps before the end.

Gasly changed tires again on the 53rd lap; he wanted to achieve the fastest race lap with fresh medium tires. He didn't lose any position after the pit stop. On the last lap, Gasly managed to set the fastest race lap in 1: 34.732 minutes.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Vettel. It was Hamilton's 75th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship. Mercedes scored their third one-two result in the third race of the season, scoring 130 out of a possible 132 points. The remaining points were placed by Verstappen, Leclerc, Gasly, Ricciardo, Pérez, Raikkonen and Albon. Since Gasly drove the fastest lap and finished in the top ten, he received an additional point.

In the drivers' championship, Hamilton took the lead from Bottas, while Verstappen remained third. The first three positions in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
