After the Belgian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 65 points from Valtteri Bottas and 87 points from Max Verstappen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 145 points and Red Bull Racing with 217 points .

At the Italian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C2 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C3 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C4 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available.

Sebastian Vettel (six), Romain Grosjean , Daniel Ricciardo , Lance Stroll , Verstappen (five each), Antonio Giovinazzi , Sergio Pérez (four each), Kevin Magnussen (three), Hamilton, Daniil Kwjat , Carlos Sainz jr. (two each), Pierre Gasly and George Russell (one each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (five times) and Vettel (three times) two former winners competed at this Grand Prix.

free training

The first free practice took place on wet track conditions. Only towards the end did the track dry so much that the drivers drove with slicks . Charles Leclerc was fastest with a lap time of 1: 27.905 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. Training had to be interrupted three times after accidents involving Kimi Räikkönen , Pérez and Gasly.

In the second free practice session, which was mainly carried out on a dry track, Leclerc was again fastest with a lap time of 1: 20.978 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. The training had to be interrupted once after Magnussen had left large amounts of gravel on the track after driving through the run-off zone .

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 20.294 minutes, ahead of Verstappen and Bottas, with 14 drivers within one second. Training began ten minutes late due to an accident in the FIA Formula 3 Championship .

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Leclerc was the fastest. Verstappen did not set a lap time due to a technical problem and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Next to him, the Williams pilots, Pérez and Grosjean were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, all other drivers had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. Hamilton was fastest. The Scuderia Toro Rosso drivers, Lando Norris , Magnussen and Giovinazzi were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. The section was briefly interrupted due to an accident by Raikkonen. After the interruption, the remaining drivers tried to set another lap time. In order to be able to use the slipstream of the man in front, they drove their lap very slowly, whereupon only Sainz managed to cross the finish line before the time ran out and do another timed lap. In addition to Räikkönen, Alexander Albon and Stroll also had no lap time in this section. The race stewards then initiated an investigation against Nico Hülkenberg , Sainz and Stroll, and the drivers involved received a warning. Leclerc set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 19.307 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. It was Leclerc's fourth pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Räikkönen was moved five starting positions down due to a premature gear change. Norris was relegated to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the fourth combustion engine, the fourth turbocharger, the fourth MGU-H , the fourth MGU-K , the fourth energy storage device and the fourth control electronics. Gasly was relegated to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the sixth internal combustion engine, fifth turbocharger, fifth MGU-H, fifth MGU-K, third energy storage device and third control electronics. Verstappen was relegated to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the fourth combustion engine, the fourth turbocharger, the fourth MGU-H, the third MGU-K, the third energy storage device and the third control electronics.

run

Leclerc won the race ahead of Bottas and Hamilton. It was Leclerc's second victory in the Formula 1 World Championship. For Ferrari it was the first victory in the Italian Grand Prix since 2010 . The remaining points were placed by Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Albon, Pérez, Verstappen, Giovinazzi and Norris. Since Hamilton had achieved the fastest race lap, he received an additional point.

The first three places in the drivers 'and constructors' championships remained unchanged.
