The 1972 Italian Grand Prix took place in Monza on September 10 and was the tenth race of the 1972 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
For safety reasons, the Monza circuit had been modified with two chicanes. The slipstream duels at top speed, which had always taken place there in previous years, were a thing of the past. Instead, due to the changed route characteristics, the brakes were now subjected to significantly more stress than before on this route.
In Italy, Lotus continued to fear legal consequences because of Jochen Rindt's fatal accident in 1970 and therefore, as in the previous year , did not appear as an official works team. Instead, a vehicle for Emerson Fittipaldi , who had the chance to secure the world title this weekend, was reported under the team name "World Wide Racing".
Mario Andretti was available as the third driver for Ferrari . The Surtees team was increased to four cars, as team founder John Surtees decided to take part in the race alongside the three regular drivers Tim Schenken , Mike Hailwood and Andrea de Adamich . It turned out that this would be his last Grand Prix start. Like several times in the first half of the season, BRM also brought four works cars to the start. At Tecno first two vehicles were reported. They were piloted by Nanni Galli and Derek Bell , who previously took turns in the cockpit of the only Tecno at irregular intervals.
training
The first row was made up of two vehicles with twelve-cylinder engines, namely the Ferrari 312B2 from Jacky Ickx and the Matra MS120D from Chris Amon . Jackie Stewart , Clay Regazzoni , Denis Hulme and Emerson Fittipaldi qualified behind them .
Henri Pescarolo and Derek Bell failed to qualify for the starting field, which is limited to 25 vehicles.
run
The moment the start flag fell, the race began with a moment of shock for Stewart, who was unable to drive due to a damaged clutch. Since he was in third place on the grid, he had to fear being rammed by one of the numerous colleagues starting behind him. However, all drivers managed to avoid the obstacle reflexively.
Ickx converted his pole position into a lead. It was followed by his team-mate Regazzoni in front of Fittipaldi and Andretti's third Ferrari. Amon was in fifth place after a bad start. Since the slipstream duels that used to be common in Monza were no longer possible, the order of the drivers in the leading group remained constant for a long time. Only Amon managed to overtake Andretti on the first laps.
The two Ferraris of Ickx and Regazzoni set themselves apart from the rest of the field at the front. Due to a brief inattention, Ickx lost the lead to his team-mate on lap 14. This collided three laps later with the straggler Carlos Pace , who had spun in one of the chicanes and was there as an obstacle on the track. This ended the race for both Regazzoni and Pace, so that Ickx took the lead again. Fittipaldi, Amon, and Hailwood followed within range.
After Hailwood fell behind due to the loss of his airbox and Amon had to retire due to a defective brake system, a duel for the top position between Ickx and Fittipaldi remained. With nine laps to go, the leader had to retire due to a problem with the battery and let Fittipaldi win. Despite his defect, Hailwood came in second ahead of Hulme.
It was the last Grand Prix victory for the tire manufacturer Firestone . Despite two races still outstanding, Lotus could no longer be overtaken in the constructors' standings. In addition, at the age of 25, Emerson Fittipaldi was the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history to date. This record remained until Fernando Alonso in 2005 won the title at the age of 24 years.
