Reports
background
Since the originally 14.1 kilometer long Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps was classified as too dangerous after the 1970 Grand Prix , there was no Belgian Grand Prix in 1971 . For 1972 the new track in Nivelles, which corresponded to the then current state of safety, was selected as the venue.
After four different drivers had won the first four World Championship races, there was still no clear tendency to be determined. Although Emerson Fittipaldi was already considered a favorite for the title by some experts, he was defeated in the non-World Championship race at Oulton Park the weekend before the Belgian GP by Denis Hulme , who had already won the South African Grand Prix . Even Jackie Stewart , defending champion and winner of the season opener in Argentina , was counted as one of the favorites. However, due to stomach problems, he was prescribed bed rest by his doctor and was therefore unable to compete in the Belgium GP.
Also Reine Wisell had to injury sidelined and should be in the BRM by -Werksteam Vern Schuppan be represented. However, this could not start because his teammate Peter Gethin had damaged his car during training and had to use Helmut Marko's car from then on . This then took over Schuppan's vehicle.
Carlos Reutemann returned to the Brabham factory team recovered from his injury . The team was then increased to three cars for the rest of the season, so that Wilson Fittipaldi , who initially stood in as a substitute for Reutemann, could remain a regular driver. He drove a BT34 from last year , while Graham Hill and Reutemann drove the new BT37 .
The Italian racing car manufacturer Tecno made its debut this weekend under the name of its main sponsor Martini as a works team in Formula 1. Nanni Galli was registered as a driver.
training
Emerson Fittipaldi secured pole position for the second time in a row and shared the front row of the grid with Clay Regazzoni and Denis Hulme. Behind them Jacky Ickx and François Cevert qualified for the second row.
run
Of the three drivers who started from the front row, Regazzoni had the best start, allowing him to take the lead. Fittipaldi, Ickx, Hulme, Cevert, Hailwood and Beltoise followed . Behind it there was a gap because Andrea de Adamich and Peter Revson had collided and the following drivers had to pass them.
On the ninth lap, Fittipaldi overtook the leader Regazzoni and increasingly pulled away. On the twelfth lap, Cevert overtook fourth-placed Hulme. After Ickx was out on lap 26, Cevert, who had moved up to third place, was able to duel with Regazzoni for second place. He won this duel in round 31.
Regazzoni then stayed third until he collided with Gallis Tecno on lap 58 during a lapping maneuver and was eliminated. This put Chris Amon in the position of a podium. On lap 77, however, he had to make a pit stop to refuel, which caused him to lose three places. Third place went to Hulme, ahead of Hailwood and the once again impressive Carlos Pace in the customer march of the previous year, who clearly outperformed the two works drivers Ronnie Peterson and Niki Lauda , who are equipped with the latest vehicles .
Registration list
1 The number 9T McLaren M19A was available to Denis Hulme as a T-Car , but was never used.
