Reports

background

A field of 32 drivers was registered for the Belgium GP, where 27 starting places were available.

Larry Perkins took over the factory surtees from Hans Binder this weekend . The local debutant Bernard de Dryver contributed as a guest driver private March of Brian Henton . A second newcomer was Héctor Rebaque at the wheel of a third factory Hesketh .

The Williams Grand Prix Engineering , BRM , Chesterfield Racing and Iberia Airlines teams , who had skipped the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks earlier, were back on the grid.

Another time one of the new McLaren M26s was reported for James Hunt , while Chesterfield acquired a copy of the previous model M23 for Brett Lunger . The Copersucar team of the Fittipaldi brothers launched the new type FD05 .

training

In rainy conditions, Mario Andretti achieved a superior training record in the Lotus 78 , which earned him the second pole position of the current season. The best lap time of runner-up John Watson was more than a second and a half slower than that of the American. The strong performance of the Lotus team was completed by Gunnar Nilsson reaching third place on the grid . This was followed by Jody Scheckter , Patrick Depailler , Jochen Mass , Carlos Reutemann and Ronnie Peterson .

run

It also rained on race day. Shortly before the start, however, there were signs of an imminent improvement in weather conditions, which prompted James Hunt to be the only driver to start the race on slicks . Ian Scheckter and Harald Ertl spun on the wet road in the first corner, but were able to continue the race.

Watson, who had made the best start, took the lead ahead of Andretti. He made a mistake in a chicane and crashed into the rear of Watson's car, whereupon the top two were eliminated on the first lap. Nilsson, who followed them immediately, had to give way abruptly so as not to collide with them. As a result, Jody Scheckter, who had already won two of the six previous races of the season, took the lead. Jochen Mass, Carlos Reutemann, Patrick Depailler, Jacques Laffite , Ronnie Peterson and Niki Lauda followed behind Gunnar Nilsson . Hunt's tire choice turned out to be the wrong decision at this stage of the race. He fell back to the penultimate place.

On the ninth lap, Reutemann overtook the measure in front of him and thus took third place. Five laps later, however, he was eliminated due to a spin, which brought Mass back into this position. Shortly afterwards, the track began to dry up significantly and some drivers decided to change tires. Due to a tactically smart early switch to dry tires, Lauda was able to overtake several opponents, while they were still on the road with rain tires or were visiting the pits themselves. In the 24th lap the Austrian, who started from 11th place, was even able to take the top position ahead of Jochen Mass and Alan Jones .

Nilsson, who had meanwhile dropped to ninth place, fought his way back to second place by the 40th lap. Since he still rode on rain tires, he benefited from the rain that set in again, as well as the fact that Mass failed due to a spin and Scheckter went to the pits again to have rain tires fitted again.

When the track began to dry out again, Nilsson overtook the leader Lauda, while Scheckter had the tires adjusted to the new weather conditions for the third time in the pits.

Gunnar Nilsson achieved his first and only Grand Prix victory ahead of Niki Lauda and Ronnie Peterson, who had relegated Vittorio Brambilla to fourth place ahead of Alan Jones and Hans-Joachim Stuck after a close duel .
