The 1977 British Grand Prix took place at Silverstone on July 16 and was the tenth race of the 1977 Automobile World Championship . The race was awarded the FIA European Grand Prix that year .
Reports
background
A field of unusual size traveled to the British Grand Prix in Silverstone. A total of 36 participants were registered.
Among them was the Renault factory team, whose eagerly awaited debut was actually planned for the home Grand Prix two weeks earlier in France , but had to be postponed at short notice. Jean-Pierre Jabouille now completed the first race of the Renault RS01 with turbo engine and thus heralded a new era in Formula 1. The turbo concept became increasingly popular over the following years.
Patrick Tambay , who was unable to qualify in the Surtees TS19 in France , got a new chance in the first-time team Theodore Racing , which used an Ensign N177 as a customer vehicle. Casual rider Tony Trimmer competed for the first time this season behind the wheel of a private Surtee .
The Canadian debutant Gilles Villeneuve was given an M23 by the McLaren factory team . This became possible because for the first time both works drivers, James Hunt and Jochen Mass , drove the M26 . Another newcomer was Andy Sutcliffe , who drove the second customer march in the RAM Racing team . The Australian Brian McGuire was also new to Formula 1 and entered a racing car that he had modified himself and that bore his name .
Vern Schuppan returned to the field as a replacement for Larry Perkins, who had left Surtees for good .
training
Due to the very extensive registration list, it was decided for the first time to use the pre-qualification procedure, which was completely new in Formula 1 at the time. All private teams that were not members of the FOCA as well as guest starters had to take part on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix. Only those pilots who achieved a sufficient lap time during this extra training were allowed to take part in the regular training sessions on Friday and Saturday, during which, as was customary at the time, the qualification for the race was held. This procedure was chosen to create more space, as the 4.7 kilometer long race track with all 36 registered vehicles would have been so overcrowded during the regular training that it was hardly possible to achieve faster lap times without hindrance from slower colleagues.
A total of 14 drivers took part in the pre-qualification. The two units were overshadowed by two serious accidents. Mikko Kozarowitsky damaged his car beyond repair and David Purley had a serious accident after his throttle cable blocked at full throttle.
Gilles Villeneuve, Patrick Tambay, Jean-Pierre Jarier , Brian Henton and Brett Lunger successfully completed the pre-qualification and were thus approved for the actual Grand Prix weekend. A little later, the organizer decided to also allow Arturo Merzario and Patrick Nève . After it became known that Harald Ertl would not be able to compete due to financial problems, Emilio de Villota was also given a replacement place.
On the Friday before the race, the actual Grand Prix weekend began in the familiar form. A strong performance by Gilles Villeneuve impressed the experts, who were eagerly awaiting the first training laps of the turbo-powered Renault with Michelin tires.
James Hunt , whose steady improvement in the McLaren M26 had already been noticed in previous races, secured pole position in front of his fellow countryman John Watson . The second row was formed by the title opponents Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter . This was followed by a pure Lotus series, consisting of the two works drivers Gunnar Nilsson and Mario Andretti . Hans-Joachim Stuck at Brabham , Surtees driver Vittorio Brambilla , the impressive newcomer Villeneuve and Tyrrell -Pilot Ronnie Peterson completed the top ten.
Since only 26 vehicles were approved for the race, four other drivers failed to qualify.
run
Watson took the lead ahead of Lauda and Scheckter due to a poor start by Hunt. Hunt followed in fourth ahead of Nilsson, Andretti, Villeneuve, Mass and Brambilla. Andretti overtook his teammate on lap three, and Hunt took third place from Scheckter on lap seven.
The first race of the turbo Renault ended after 16 laps, of all things, due to damage to the turbocharger.
Villeneuve had to make a pit stop due to the increased engine temperature. After the mechanics inspected the problem, he was sent back on the track. In the 23rd lap, Hunt came in second with a braking maneuver against Lauda.
On the 50th lap, Watson fell victim to a defect in the fuel system, just like two weeks earlier while in the lead. As he headed for the pit to refuel, Hunt took the lead and defended it to the finish. It was the first win of the season for the defending champion.
Since both Scheckter and Andretti were both in a promising position shortly before the end of the race due to engine damage, Lauda finished second ahead of Nilsson, Mass, Stuck and Laffite.
