The 1976 British Grand Prix took place on July 18 at the Brands Hatch Circuit and was the ninth race of the 1976 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
In line with the annual change with the Silverstone Circuit , where the British Grand Prix of the previous year had been held, the race took place again in 1976 at Brands Hatch, where in the meantime several slight modifications had been made to improve safety.
Some guest starters complemented the usual field of participants. Among them was the debutante Divina Galica for the first time since the season opener in Brazil . As Lella Lombardi at the wheel of one of RAM Racing's two customer Brabham teams returned to the list of participants, this weekend was the first and so far only time in the history of Formula 1 that two women entered a Grand Prix at the same time. Mike Wilds was given a private Shadow DN3 for his home race . Bob Evans made his only appearance this season at the wheel of the RAM team's second Brabham.
While Chris Amon returned to the Ensign team's cockpit , the Walter Wolf Racing and Copersucar-Fittipaldi teams reduced their commitment to just one vehicle each for cost reasons.
training
Niki Lauda secured pole position in the Ferrari 312T2, ahead of James Hunt in the McLaren M23 and Mario Andretti in the increasingly competitive Lotus 77 . Clay Regazzoni completed the second row of the grid in the second Ferrari ahead of Patrick Depailler in the Tyrrell P34 and Chris Amon, who again showed a convincing training performance with the Ensign N176 . Among the four cars that completed the top ten were three of the four works March .
In addition to Mike Wilds, both participating women and Jacky Ickx failed to qualify for one of the 26 starting places. For Ickx this was the last outing for the Wolf-Williams team.
run
Immediately after the start, the two leading Ferraris collided in the first corner, which caused Regazzoni to spin. Hunt tried to evade this but failed. His McLaren briefly lost contact with the ground after touching the Ferrari, but there was no rollover. Jacques Laffite crashed into the lane after he had also collided with Regazzoni's car, which was facing the opposite direction. The rest of the field passed the accident site without any problems. Nevertheless, due to the large number of debris lying on the track, the race management decided to cancel the race with the red flag. Meanwhile, Hunt drove to his box with a damaged suspension and used a shortcut along the way.
During the interruption, there was disagreement as to whether Regazzoni and Laffite, who had both remained uninjured, were allowed to start again with their respective replacement cars, although they had already been eliminated at the time the race was canceled. Both teams decided to participate again. Hunt's car could be repaired before the restart, but was classified as no longer eligible to start due to the shortcut chosen by Hunt on the way to the pits. Aided by the loud protests of the spectators present, Hunt finally received the renewed starting authorization from the race management.
On the second attempt to start, in which Lauda was also able to maintain its position at the top, the first cars made it through the first corners without any problems. In the back of the field, however, Bob Evans and Guy Edwards as well as Patrick Depailler and Hans-Joachim Stuck collided . For Edwards and Stuck this meant the end of the race.
The ranking at the top with Lauda ahead of Hunt, Regazzoni, Jody Scheckter and Ronnie Peterson remained constant during the first laps until Peterson fell behind Vittorio Brambilla . He had new tires fitted to the pits on lap 15, so that Arturo Merzario took fifth place . Due to the technical failures of Regazzoni and Brambilla as well as the further dropping back of Peterson, Gunnar Nilsson came fourth ahead of Tom Pryce .
Due to transmission problems, Lauda slowed down in the second half of the race. Hunt caught up, overtook the Austrian on lap 45 and finally won the race by a clear margin. Scheckter crossed the finish line in third and John Watson , favored by the failure of Nilsson, in fourth.
After the race, Ferrari protested against Hunt's victory, as he was actually no longer allowed to participate in the restart. The protest was initially rejected. A final decision was not made until about two months later in September 1976: Niki Lauda was subsequently declared the winner of the race and James Hunt was disqualified. The participation of Clay Regazzoni and Jacques Laffite in the restart was also judged in retrospect to be illegal. Since neither of them had finished the race anyway, this had no effect.
