Robert "Bob" Evans (born June 11, 1947 in Waddington ) is a former English racing driver .

Career

Bob Evans was one of those racing drivers who were unable to assert themselves in Formula 1 . The lack of competitive material made it impossible for him to show his talent. He started his career on a Triumph Sprite before moving to Formula Ford in 1971 and Formula 3 that same year . In both cases he contested the European championship of these racing series, but with moderate success. He survived a serious accident during test drives on the Castle Combe Circuit ; however, the injuries were so severe that he had to take a year off.

In 1973 and 1974 Bob Evans took part in the European Formula 5000 Championship . In 1973 he started this series for Tokan , the following season he played on a Lola T332 borrowed from Alan McKechnie , with which he won the championship.

formula 1

In 1975, he received an offer from BRM to enter Formula 1 for the English racing team. However, the team was past its prime and Evans struggled the entire season with the heavy BRM P201 . A ninth place at the Belgian Grand Prix in Zolder remained his best result this year. It was only due to his talent that he took the car to the start of a Grand Prix seven times.

In 1976 the tide seemed to turn when Colin Chapman offered him a contract as a test driver for Lotus , which Evans accepted. He contested three races that year as a reserve driver for the team, the Grand Prix of South Africa and the USA West, with tenth place in Kyalami remaining his best result. His strongest performance was at the Race of Champions when his Lotus 77 - Ford - Cosworth ran out of gas just before the finish line. At this point Evans was fourth in the field.

Lotus approved it for the British Grand Prix at RAM Racing . He drove his last Grand Prix with a Brabham BT44B -Ford-Cosworth and retired after a gearbox failure.
