1979 Le Mans 24 hour race

The victorious Kremer Porsche 935 with starting number 41. The car was driven by Bill and Don Whittington and the German Klaus Ludwig.

The BMW Art Car designed by Andy Warhol by Hervé Poulain, Manfred Winkelhock and Marcel Mignot with the original starting number 76 achieved 6th overall

The 47th 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 47 ^e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from 9 to 10 June 1979 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .

The race

In the spring of the year the Tertre Rouge curve passage was rebuilt. This became necessary due to a change in the public road at this point. This made the sequence of turns a lot faster after the meal. The most important vehicle in the 1979 race was the Porsche 935 , which was used by teams from Europe and the USA. The Porsche -Werksmannschaft brought two revised Porsche 936 Le Mans, by Jacky Ickx , Brian Redman , Jürgen Barth , Hurley Haywood and bob wollek were driven. After Renault withdrew , these two vehicles were the clear favorites for overall victory. The two Ford M10 from Grand Touring Cars, which were newly developed for Le Mans, lacked the technical maturity for a real chance of overall victory.

However, neither the two works Porsches nor the two Fords were included in the ranking. Vern Schuppan's , Jean-Pierre Jaussaud and David Hobbs' Ford M10 crossed the finish line, but was not classified because the distance was too short - the car only managed 121 laps due to major technical problems. Jacky Ickx was disqualified because he received unauthorized help with a repair on the track.

Overall victory was secured by a private team, Kremer Racing . The US brothers Bill and Don Whittington and the German Klaus Ludwig sat in the car with the number 41 . American actor Paul Newman made a successful Le Mans debut in the second-placed Dick Barbour Porsche 935 .
