Le Mans 24 hour race 1936
The 14th 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 14 s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also Les 24 Heures du Mans, XIVe Grand Prix D'Endurance, Circuit de la Sarthe , should from 1 to August 2, 1936 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .
The race
After the race had been postponed several times, the event had to be finally canceled one week before the August date. Unrest and strikes hit France . Triggered by the Spanish Civil War , industry in France almost came to a standstill. Ettore Bugatti was denied access to the Bugatti plant in Molsheim by workers and 25,000 people went on strike at the Renault plant . In the summer of 1936, more than five million people were on strike in France.
In this environment, it was next to impossible to hold a long distance race . Nevertheless, 68 teams had submitted their reports, including the French works teams from Delage , Talbot and Delahaye . From England there were reports from Aston Martin , Frazer-Nash , Austin and Riley who also wanted to send factory cars. In addition to a large number of privateers, Adler would only have been a German team at the start for the second time since the first race in 1923 .
