The 73rd 24 Hours of Le Mans , the 73 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also Le Mans 24 Hours, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans took place from June 18 to 19, 2005 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .

The race

In 2005, the previously superior Audi R8 with the Pescarolo C60 was an equal opponent. Henri Pescarolo took advantage of a loophole in the Le Mans regulations. As with the Dome S101 , the chassis still complied with the old LMP 900 regulations, but the aerodynamics of an LMP1 vehicle of this year. With the Pescarolo C60 Hybrid , Pescarolo suddenly had a victorious LMP1 concept that led to serial successes in the Le Mans Series . As in the previous year , Pescarolo only hired French drivers. The car with starting number 16 was driven by Emmanuel Collard , Jean-Christophe Boullion and Érik Comas . For the car with starting number 17, the signing of the rally world champion Sébastien Loeb , who was already very popular in France at the time, succeeded ; Soheil Ayari and Éric Hélary started with him .

As in previous years, the Audi R8s were used by private teams. Two vehicles were registered by the US Champion Racing Team. ORECA took over a third vehicle . For the Audi's, the air flow rate of the turbocharger was restricted, and the racing cars had to start with an additional weight of 50 kg.

In practice, the Pescarolo C60 were significantly faster than the R8. On his pole position lap, Emmanuel Collard was three seconds ahead of the best Audi with Allan McNish at the wheel with a time of 3: 34.715 minutes . In the race, the two French LMP-1 prototypes started from the front row were not stable enough. Problems with the gearbox in particular caused problems for the car. In the end, the car with the number 16 was two laps short of the winning car in which Tom Kristensen celebrated his seventh and Marco Werner his first overall victory.
