Le Mans 24 hour race 1964
The 32nd 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 32 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from June 20 to 21, 1964 the Circuit des 24 Heures .
The race
The big attraction of the race were the three Ford GT40s from the Ford Motor Company . Eric Broadley developed this new American sports car in Slough, England. The racing program was headed by John Wyer , who in 1959 led Aston Martin Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby to overall victory as racing director . However, at the test weekend in April, Ford suffered a serious setback: Both Roy Salvadori and Jo Schlesser had serious accidents because the vehicles became completely unstable on the fast straights. However, by the time of the race in June, the concept was revised. and the GT40 got more downforce.
In practice, however, the factory Ferrari were the fastest. John Surtees drove the fastest lap time ever achieved at Le Mans in the Ferrari 330P . The works cars from Maranello took the lead in the race after the start, but the new Ferrari 250LM that David Piper drove for the North American Racing Team broke down on the first lap with a defect in the oil pump. A Ford took the lead for the first time after one hour of racing when Masten Gregory took the lead. During the night, however, all Fords with technical defects failed. Ferrari also lost two 275Ps due to failures before midnight .
Tragedy in front of the Indianapolis
When it got dark, AC Cars works driver Peter Bolton had an accident on the fast passage between the Mulsanne and Indianapolis bends . The AC Cobra collided with Giancarlo Baghetti's Ferrari 275P after a gearbox failure . Both cars slipped into an exit zone that was closed to spectators. But three people had climbed over the barrier and were hit by the rotating racing car. All three died at the scene of the accident. At this point in time, the Maserati Tipo 151 with Maurice Trintignant at the wheel had advanced to third place overall. A little later, a defective electrical system stopped him.
After John Surtees and Lorenzo Bandini lost their lead after problems with the fuel supply and a resulting long pit stop, the way was clear for the overall victory of Nino Vaccarella and Jean Guichet in the factory Ferrari 275P. It was the first driver win for France since 1954 .
A curiosity occurred in Tony Maggs' vehicle : ice was used to cool the carburetors of the 12-cylinder engine in the Ferrari 250 GTO. Some of it fell into the cockpit and got stuck between the pedals. As a result, Maggs suffered mild frostbite in June.
