Pedro Rodríguez de la Vega (born January 18, 1940 in Mexico City , † July 11, 1971 in Nuremberg , Germany ) was a Mexican racing car driver .
Career
Monoposto
Rodríguez was the son of wealthy parents in Mexico and won his first motorcycle race at the age of twelve . Together with his two years younger brother Ricardo , he won important endurance races such as the Daytona Beach 24 Hours in the early 1960s . Ricardo had a fatal accident in training for the Mexican Grand Prix on November 1, 1962 with a Lotus.
After only a very short period of reflection, Pedro Rodríguez decided to take part in motorsport again in 1963 so that his brother's name would never be forgotten. He repeatedly won the Daytona 24 Hours and also took part in Formula 1 races. On January 1, 1967, he won his first Grand Prix as a teammate of Jochen Rindt in Kyalami on the bulky Cooper - Maserati .
He was a member of the BRM team in 1968 , drove unsuccessfully for Ferrari in 1969 and returned to BRM in 1970. His victory at the Grand Prix of Spa-Francorchamps was the last GP victory in GP history on a high-speed track without run-off zones and chicanes. Rodríguez, who, in the face of a threatened cancellation due to rain, declared that he wanted to drive the Grand Prix of Spa alone without ranking, was extremely brave and was considered an almost reckless pilot. He was therefore feared by his colleagues. He celebrated his last Formula 1 victory on April 9, 1971 at BRM in Oulton Park .
Sports car
He won 15 sports car races , including the 1968 Le Mans 24 Hours in a Ford GT40 alongside Lucien Bianchi , twice the Daytona 24 Hours in a Porsche 917K in John Wyer's racing team with the famous Gulf livery, 1970 alongside by Leo Kinnunen and Brian Redman and in 1971 together with Jackie Oliver . And a week before his death, the 1000 km from Zeltweg in a Porsche 917 , of which he sat 960 km at the wheel and caught up two laps behind Clay Regazzoni's Ferrari. In 1970 he won the sports car world championship , also in a Porsche 917 .
Rodríguez, who was one of the best sports car drivers in the world in 1970 and 1971, died on July 11, 1971 at the Norisring in the twelfth round of the European Interseries race in an accident in the Ferrari 512M borrowed from Swiss racing driver Herbert Müller .
