The 1971 British Grand Prix took place on July 17th at Silverstone , England and was the sixth race of the 1971 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

On the weekend before the British Grand Prix, Pedro Rodríguez had a fatal accident in an Interserie race at the Norisring . Initially, it was not replaced at BRM , so only two works cars were entered for the sixth World Championship round.

Meanwhile, Lotus continued testing the turbine-powered Type 56 . Factory driver Reine Wisell drove the car this weekend while his ancestral Lotus 72 was taken over by Dave Charlton .

McLaren and Surtees each registered a third works car for the race, driven by Jackie Oliver and Derek Bell respectively . Another addition to the field was Mike Beuttler , who contested his first Grand Prix in a private March.

training

The training ended without any big surprises with Clay Regazzoni on pole position next to Jackie Stewart and Jo Siffert on the front row in front of Emerson Fittipaldi and Ronnie Peterson in row two.

Race course

Shortly after the start, Graham Hill and Jackie Oliver collided in the back of the field . For both of them this already meant the end of the race, while the two Ferraris of Clay Regazzoni and Jacky Ickx, who started from the third row, took the lead.

On the second lap, Stewart and Siffert were both able to overtake Ickx. On lap four Stewart also overtook Regazzoni and took the lead. While he was already gaining a lead there, Siffert also passed Regazzoni. The resulting ranking of the first three remained constant over several laps. Fittipaldi, who fought his way through the field after a bad start, caused the most attention.

On lap 17, Siffert had to give Regazzoni defenseless second place due to technical difficulties. The up to then fourth placed Ickx headed for the pit on lap 37 due to engine problems and gave up a few laps later. Since Siffert fell further and further behind, Peterson took third position.

After Regazzoni was also eliminated on lap 48, Peterson took second place, followed by Tim Schenken and Fittipaldi.

A few laps before the end, Schenken had to give up due to transmission problems, but was still classified in twelfth place because of the distance covered. Third place went to Emerson Fittipaldi for the second time in a row.

Henri Pescarolo scored his first World Championship points of the season in fourth. The two Surtees regular drivers John Surtees and Rolf Stommelen also achieved the points.
