The Grand Prix of Great Britain in 1997 (officially L RAC British Grand Prix ) took place on 13 July at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone instead and was the ninth race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1997 . Jacques Villeneuve took first place ahead of Jean Alesi and Alexander Wurz .
report
background
Since Gerhard Berger's father died, Alexander Wurz stepped in for his compatriot and competed in another race.
Thirty years ago, Renault made its debut as an engine manufacturer at the 1967 British Grand Prix .
training
Friday training
Mika Häkkinen was able to secure the fastest time with 1: 22.935 in front of the Williams of Jacques Villeneuve and Heinz-Harald Frentzen . Michael Schumacher was a second behind in seventh place.
All drivers were placed within five seconds.
Saturday training
As on the day before, Häkkinen was able to prevail over Villeneuve with a lead of six hundredths. Schumacher was also able to improve from seven to three and was only half a second behind the Finn.
All drivers were placed within three and a half seconds.
Qualifying
This time the Williams team prevailed and with Villeneuve and Frentzen occupy the first row, the strong Häkkinen had to admit defeat to the Canadian in third place, 2 tenths behind. Behind it are the Schumacher brothers Michael and Ralf on four and five.
All drivers, except for Norberto Fontana , who did not set a time, were within four seconds.
Warm-up
Damon Hill was three tenths faster than Eddie Irvine from Northern Ireland . The strong Hakkinen could only take ninth place.
All drivers were placed within five and a half seconds.
run
Villeneuve was able to maintain the lead in front of Schumacher at the start, while the second Williams, Frentzen, had to start from behind and got into chaos there. Jos Verstappen crashed into his car and he had to give up the race without having completed a lap. The Dutchman was able to continue the race, but also had to park his car on lap 45. Even before the first completed lap it was over for Ukyo Katayama as he was also involved in an accident.
On lap 23 Schumacher was able to pass Villeneuve and take the lead. But he only stayed in front for 15 laps, as he had to retire on lap 38 due to a wheel bearing damage. His worst rival in the fight for the world championship, Jacques Villeneuve, took the lead again. He stayed there until his disastrous pit stop, after which Häkkinen was able to enjoy the lead for a short time until he was overtaken by the Canadian again on lap 53 because the Mercedes engine gave up the ghost.
The race itself was marked by a lot of engine damage, so in addition to Schumacher and Häkkinen, Rubens Barrichello , Mika Salo , Jos Verstappen , Jan Magnussen and Shinji Nakano were also canceled . One of the bitterest weekends for Ford, as all four Ford units suffered engine damage in the race.
Villeneuve was able to finish the last lap and secure victory over the Benettons. For Alexander Wurz , third place means his first podium finish in his still young Formula 1 career. Since Nakano was eliminated in the last laps, Damon Hill was able to get the first point of this season for himself and his Arrows team .
It's Williams 100th Grand Prix win, 28 years after Clay Regazzoni , also at Silverstone, took the team's first win.
