After the end of his Formula 1 career, he successfully competed in touring car and sports car races . In 2014 he competed for Corvette Racing in the United SportsCar Championship .

He is the father of Kevin Magnussen , who also made his Formula 1 debut for McLaren in 2014 .

Career

Karting

Magnussen started karting at the age of eleven and won his first national title in the second year of his career. In 1987, shortly after his 14th birthday, he became world kart champion . This makes him one of the youngest drivers to win this title. In 1989 and 1990 he repeated this success, last year in the Formula K . In total, he won three world titles.

Formula racing

Magnussen made his debut in motorsport for Monoposto at Jyllandsringen in Denmark in Formula Ford . In 1992 he won seven of 19 races in the British Formula Ford 1160 and finished the season in third place. He also won the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch . This led to his entry into Formula Vauxhall Lotus , where he won four races before finishing the 1993 season on the team of Paul Stewart , son of the famous Jackie Stewart .

In 1994 Magnussen dominated the British Formula 3 Championship . He won 14 of 18 races and completed his first Formula 1 test at McLaren , where he was then hired as a Formula 1 test driver. In 1995 Magnussen drove in the DTM / ITC and took part in a Formula 1 race for McLaren for the first time as a substitute driver for Mika Häkkinen . In 1996 he continued to drive in the ITC and had a few guest starts in the Champ Car series as a replacement for Emerson Fittipaldi, who resigned at short notice after an accident . In 1997 and 1998 he was a regular driver alongside Rubens Barrichello at the Stewart Grand Prix . In 1998 he won his first and only world championship point at the Canadian Grand Prix , but was then replaced by the Dutchman Jos Verstappen .

Sports car sport

In 1999 Magnussen made his debut in sports car racing. He started in the Panoz LMP-1 in the American Le Mans Series and also took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans . From 1999 to 2002 he was always able to achieve at least one overall victory in the ALMS, and in Le Mans the best result was eighth place in the LMP900 class in 2000.

In 2003, after the end of the Panoz sports car program, he drove in a Ferrari 550 GTS Maranello for Prodrive in the ALMS and achieved two victories in the GTS class. In Le Mans he drove an Audi R8 from the Audi Sport Japan Team Goh team and came fourth.

From 2004 Magnussen started for Corvette Racing in the ALMS and in Le Mans. Initially, he only contested the long-distance races (Le Mans, Sebring 12 Hours , Petit Le Mans ), in 2008 he became a regular driver for the works team. Since then he has celebrated four class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and achieved his best overall ranking with fourth place in 2006 . In 2008 he won the driver's title in the GT1 class in the ALMS .

After the end of the ALMS, he competed in the successor series United SportsCar Championship in 2014 , also for Corvette Racing . At the end of the 2019 racing season, the 16-year collaboration between Corvette Racing and Jan Magnussen came to an end.

Touring car sport

From 2001 to 2010 Magnussen drove in the Danish Touring Car Championship , where he won the championship title in 2003 and 2008. After initially driving a Peugeot 306 and later a Peugeot 307 , he switched to a Toyota Corolla in 2005 . From 2006 he drove a BMW 320si for the Den Blå Avis team , and in 2006 he made a guest start in the World Touring Car Championship for Racing Bart Mampaey . In 2010 he started in a Chevrolet Lacetti for the Danish Perfection Racing team .
